TEASER

EUTERPE. DOUG AND MARTY ARE GOING OVER THE ARRANGEMENTS FOR THAT NIGHT. MARTY, AT THE PIANO, IS PLAYING THE INTRO TO A SONG.

DOUG: That's it... That's the sound I'm looking for...

WE SEE NICK WALK IN. DAVE GOES TO GREET HIM.

MARTY: Can we do it one more time? I want to make sure I've got it right.

DAVE WALKS UP TO DOUG, WITH NICK FOLLOWING CLOSE BEHIND.

DAVE: Excuse me, Doug, Nick Corelli to see you.

DOUG: Nick...

NICK AND DOUG SHAKE HANDS.

DOUG: (CONT'D) 'Good to see you.

NICK: Likewise...

DOUG TURNS TO MARTY.

DOUG: Marty, we'll run through this later. Dave, will you check on the dinner special?

DAVE: Sure thing.

DAVE LEAVES FOR THE KITCHEN. DOUG MOTIONS TO A TABLE.

DOUG: Shall we?

NICK: Can't see a reason not to.

DOUG AND NICK SIT.

DOUG: Brian said you stopped in at Doug's Place the other day...

NICK: I did...

DOUG: 'Seems you made quite an impression on him...

NICK: (SMILE) I thought perhaps I had...

DOUG: So, what did you think of the place?

NICK: I like it. The location and the decor are perfect for what I have in mind. I think it will attract the kind of crowd I want.

DOUG: This means you're interested?

NICK: This means I'll take it... If your offer still stands.

HOLD ON DOUG'S SMILE.

CUT TO: BRADY PUB. CARRIE WALKS INTO THE PUB AND GOES TO SHAWN, WHO IS STANDING BEHIND THE BAR.

CARRIE: Hi Grandpa!

SHAWN: Well, if it isn't my beautiful granddaughter. What brings you here today?

CARRIE: I thought I'd pay you a visit... and hopefully get a bowl of Grandma's chowder.

SHAWN: I think we can manage that...

SHAWN OPENS THE DOOR TO THE KITCHEN.

SHAWN: (CONT'D) Caroline! Come and see who's stopped by to pay us a visit! (BEAT) And bring along a pipin' hot bowl of chowder with you.

CAROLINE ENTERS FROM THE KITCHEN, CARRYING A SOUP BOWL.

CAROLINE: Carrie! This is a wonderful surprise.

CAROLINE PLACES THE BOWL IN FRONT OF CARRIE. CARRIE PICKS UP A SPOON, AND BEGINS TO EAT THE CHOWDER.

CAROLINE: (CONT'D) How is everything, dear?

CARRIE: This chowder is wonderful, Grandma.

CAROLINE: (LAUGHING) That's good to hear. But, what I meant was, how is everything with you?

CARRIE STOPS EATING, AND PUTS DOWN THE SPOON.

CARRIE: I got another letter from Dad and Marlena yesterday.

SHAWN: Anything wrong?

CARRIE: Oh, they're all fine. (BEAT) It sounds like Eric's got his first girlfriend. Her name's Vanessa, and Dad's having a hard time getting him to concentrate on his schoolwork anymore.

SHAWN: (CONT'D) Don't he sound just like a Brady boy? Always minding the ladies, and never payin' much attention to anything else.

CAROLINE MAKES A FACE AT SHAWN AND IGNORES HIS FATHERLY BRAGGING.

CAROLINE: Speaking of school, how is it going for you, Carrie?

CARRIE: (SIGHS) It's okay. (CHANGING THE SUBJECT AGAIN) Have you heard anything from Aunt Kim lately?

CAROLINE LOOKS AT CARRIE QUIZZICALLY.

CAROLINE: Carrie, is anything wrong?

HOLD ON CARRIE.

CUT TO: KAYLA'S LIVING ROOM. KAYLA GOES TO THE FRONT DOOR. SHE OPENS IT TO MARCUS.

KAYLA: Marcus! Come in.

MARCUS WALKS INSIDE AND KISSES KAYLA. KAYLA BREAKS THE KISS, AND GOES TO SHUT THE DOOR.

MARCUS: I'm a little early. I hope it's not a problem.

KAYLA: Of course it's not a problem. Jo came by earlier to pick up Stephanie, and it gave me all sorts of time to get ready.

MARCUS: I bet Stephanie's excited about spending the night with Jo.

KAYLA: That's an understatement. When Jo told her that they were going to bake cookies tonight, she practically ran out the door.

MARCUS PUTS HIS ARMS AROUND KAYLA.

MARCUS: This also gives us a chance to spend some time together... alone.

KAYLA LOOSENS HERSELF FROM THEIR EMBRACE AND TAKES A FEW STEPS BACK. MARCUS LOOKS AT KAYLA, PUZZLED.

KAYLA: Can I get a drink for you, before we go to dinner?

MARCUS: No, I'm fine. (BEAT) Hey, Kay, why don't we sit down for a minute.

KAYLA WALKS OVER TO THE COUCH AND SITS DOWN. MARCUS FOLLOWS AND SITS NEXT TO HER.

MARCUS: (CONT'D) Kayla, I can't help but notice... is something wrong?

KAYLA: (SIGHS) I guess I'm pretty transparent. I'm sorry, Marcus. I can't help it. It's...

KAYLA'S VOICE TRAILS OFF. SUDDENLY, MARCUS' EYES WIDEN, AND HE SLAPS HIS FOREHEAD WITH ONE OF HIS HANDS.

MARCUS: What's wrong with me?! I can't believe I forgot. (BEAT) Today's the twenty-third...

KAYLA NODS HER HEAD.

MARCUS: (CONT'D) ... the day that Steve died.

OUT ON MARCUS' REALIZATION.

ACT I

KAYLA'S LIVING ROOM. MARCUS AND KAYLA. IN PROGRESS.

MARCUS: Kay, I'm sorry. I didn't think...

KAYLA COVERS MARCUS' HANDS WITH HER OWN.

KAYLA: No, Marcus. It's okay. I'm sorry for being so down.

MARCUS: Hey, it's completely understandable.

KAYLA: Yes, but still... I shouldn't be dumping all of this on you.

MARCUS: It's okay.

KAYLA: No, it isn't okay. It's been four years, and life does go on... I will always have a part of Steve with me because of Stephanie. And, I have my memories. (BEAT) But, I can't help missing Steve... especially today.

MARCUS: That's normal. (SADLY) I miss my homey... my brother, too.

KAYLA: Thanks for understanding, Marcus.

KAYLA MOVES TO HOLD MARCUS, BUT NOTICES HIS GRIM EXPRESSION.

KAYLA: (CONT'D) What's wrong? I promise, I won't put a damper on our entire evening.

MARCUS: It's not that.

KAYLA: What is it?

MARCUS: Nothing. Just forget it.

MARCUS TURNS AWAY FROM KAYLA, VISIBLY DISTRESSED. HOLD ON MARCUS.

CUT TO: EUTERPE. NICK AWAITS DOUG'S ANSWER.

DOUG: Absolutely. A club for a club?

DOUG HOLDS OUT HIS HAND, WHICH NICK TAKES AND SHAKES.

NICK: Done!

DOUG: I'll have Mickey draw up the official papers, if that's okay with you?

NICK: Fine.

DOUG: Then I'll messenger a copy to you and your lawyer to check out. We can meet to sign, once we're both satisfied with the paperwork.

NICK: You got this all planned out. (BEAT) You were pretty sure I'd take the deal, weren't you?

DOUG: I knew if it'd been me, I would have. Shall we celebrate with a drink?

NICK: Well, since my bar isn't open, you'll have to buy.

DOUG: But of course. What's your pleasure?

NICK: Scotch rocks.

DOUG TURNS AND MOTIONS TO DAVE, WHO IS NOW STANDING NEAR THE BAR.

DOUG: Dave, two scotch rocks... make it Black Label.

NICK: Good choice. (BEAT) So, it seems you know food, wine and good scotch. What else do you know about?

DOUG: I know a little about a lot of things, Nick. That was always my style... pick up bits of information in my travels, here and there...

NICK: I sense a story here, and I'm frankly curious. From the bits and pieces I hear, you and I aren't so very different...

DOUG: Could be, could be. And there are a lot of stories, but none I'm prepared to tell here and now.

NICK: I can understand that. We haven't known each other that long, after all...

DOUG: There is that. I'm sure our paths will cross enough in times to come that eventually I'll be telling you all my deep, dark secrets.

NICK: But not today?

DOUG: But not today. Besides, I'm working.

DAVE BRINGS THE DRINKS AND SETS THEM BEFORE THE TWO MEN.

NICK: If this is "working", I like it!

DOUG: There's a lot to do to get a club running, you know that. It's only after it's all set up and going smoothly that you can sit back and sip a scotch.

NICK: Well, even if you are at that point and I'm not, let's toast... to you telling me all about your life when you come to the opening of...

DOUG: You've named it already?

NICK: After Wings, there was only one name I could use... Nick's Cafe!

HOLD ON NICK AND DOUG'S TOASTING GLASSES.

CUT TO: JANET'S OFFICE. JANET IS AT HER DESK DOING PAPERWORK WHEN MORGAN KNOCKS ON THE OPEN DOOR.

MORGAN: Are you ready for the latest?

JANET: (MOTIONING FOR MORGAN TO SHUT THE DOOR) Do I want to know?

MORGAN SHUTS THE DOOR AND SITS IN THE CHAIR ACROSS FROM JANET'S DESK.

MORGAN: There was another carjacking today; this one at the supermarket on Sixth Street. (BEAT) In broad daylight!

JANET: Damn. Was anyone hurt?

MORGAN: No, but we have several badly shaken witnesses.

JANET: (ANGRY) Well, no one can say that Salem's behind the times. We even get the trendy crimes. (BEAT) Can any of the witnesses identify who did this?

MORGAN: We've got their statements. None of their descriptions match those of the earlier attacks.

JANET: A copycat?

MORGAN: Looks like. (SIGHS) These punks today think that it's so easy. Just flash a gun and take the car with the keys in it, instead of having to go to all the trouble of breaking in.

JANET: Yet another wonderful example of the world we live in. (BEAT) We've been lucky so far, Morgan. No one has been killed or seriously hurt. Yet.

JANET GETS UP FROM HER CHAIR, AND STARTS TO PACE BEHIND HER DESK.

JANET: (CONT'D) Now all we have to do is put a stop to this before there's any bloodshed.

OUT ON JANET, AS SHE PACES.

ACT II

BRADY PUB. CAROLINE, CARRIE, AND SHAWN ARE TALKING AT THE BAR. IN PROGRESS.

CAROLINE: (CONCERNED) What is it, Carrie? Is there some kind of problem at school?

CARRIE: (UNCONVINCINGLY) No, Grandma. Everything's fine at school.

CAROLINE: (SUSPICIOUSLY) You'll forgive me if I'm not convinced...

CARRIE: (RESIGNEDLY) Oh, I don't know. (BEAT) Sometimes, I think school is the problem.

SHAWN: Whatever do you mean, darlin'?

CARRIE: I mean... I'm surrounded by people who have goals. Their lives have direction. (BEAT) It's a constant reminder that I have no clue about what I want to do with my life.

SHAWN: (SMILING) Ah, that's all it is...

CARRIE: (SURPRISED) What do you mean, that's all? Grandpa, I'm a sophomore in college, and I haven't even declared a major yet!

CAROLINE: Carrie, I think it's a little soon to be so worried.

SHAWN: Aye, your grandma's right. You're still so young. You've got plenty of time to make those kinda decisions.

CARRIE: Maybe you see it that way, but to me, it looks like I'm throwing my life away by doing nothing.

CAROLINE: Carrie, dear, I know that things are a lot different than when your grandpa and I were your age. I know things move a lot faster. (BEAT) But, remember this... It's just as easy to throw your life away by trying to do things too quickly, and making the wrong decisions.

CARRIE: (SIGHS) You're right. (BEAT) I'm just confused. It seems to be so easy for some people.

SHAWN: Like who?

CARRIE: Well, look at Jonah. He's the same age as me, and he's already decided on a career. He knows exactly what he wants to do with his life.

SHAWN: Maybe he does. But everyone's different, ya know. We all have to find our own way.

CAROLINE: Maybe you should do some exploring. Take a seminar or two, get involved in some clubs, or something. Try different things until you find something that really interests you.

CARRIE: Y'know, I'd thought about doing that. I was checking out a couple of the clubs on campus, but I wasn't sure if I really wanted to get involved with them.

SHAWN: Well, maybe you should just jump right in and do it. It might pay off to go ahead and take some chances.

CARRIE: 'You think so?

CAROLINE: Of course, dear. That's what college is for: To learn about the world, and to learn about yourself, so you can find where you fit into the world.

SHAWN: Aye. You should get out there and experiment a little. Try out some new things, and see what happens.

CARRIE: I think I just might do that. (BEAT) Thanks, you guys. Thanks for listening.

SHAWN: Anytime, darlin'.

CAROLINE: We're always here for you, whenever you need us.

CARRIE SMILES GRATEFULLY AT SHAWN AND CAROLINE. HOLD ON CARRIE'S SMILE.

CUT TO: KAYLA'S HOUSE. KAYLA PUTS HER HAND ON MARCUS' LEG.

KAYLA: I know you too well for that. There is something bothering you. (BEAT) C'mon, you know you can talk to me.

MARCUS WAVES HIS HANDS.

MARCUS: It's nothing. Something I shouldn't even be concerned about.

KAYLA: Is it something about work?

MARCUS: No, nothing like that. Really, I don't want to talk about it.

KAYLA: (WORRIED) Is it something about us? About me?

MARCUS: No, everything is fine with us. Don't ever think that.

KAYLA: Well, what then?

MARCUS: All right, I'll tell you. But I warn you that it's stupid and petty and I feel like a real jerk. (BEAT) I'm jealous. (LONG BEAT) Of Steve.

KAYLA: (CONFUSED) Steve? I don't understand.

MARCUS: I told you it was stupid. I'm here, alive, with a job I love and the most wonderful woman in the world by my side.

MARCUS LEANS OVER TO GIVE KAYLA A KISS ON THE CHEEK.

MARCUS: (CONT'D) But there it is, that green-eyed monster. I can't shake it. (BEAT) Sometimes I feel like I can't ever measure up to Steve... or his memory.

HOLD ON MARCUS' SADNESS.

CUT TO: EUTERPE. DOUG AND NICK. IN PROGRESS.

DOUG: Nick's Cafe? (LAUGHS) You're not much of a Bogie fan, are you?

NICK: Bogie's the best. 'Ever see "The Maltese Falcon"?

DOUG: See it? I think I lived it. (SHAKES HIS HEAD) But my favorite Bogart flicks are those he made with Lauren Bacall.

NICK: Figures... You and Julie remind me of Bogie and Bacall...

DOUG: I'll take that as the highest compliment...

NICK: As it was intended...

IAN WALKS BY AND STOPS TO LISTEN.

NICK: And don't you think his greatest role was Sam Spade?

DOUG: No, I disagree. "African Queen" was far better.

NICK: A better film overall, maybe, but, Bogart was Sam Spade.

IAN SITS DOWN AND JOINS IN.

IAN: No way. "Treasure of Sierra Madre" was his greatest performance.

IAN, NICK AND DOUG LOOK AT EACH, SMILE, AND CHORUS:

NICK/IAN/DOUG: "Badges? We don't need no stinkin' badges."

THE THREE MEN LAUGH.

IAN: (CONT'D) (DOING A PETER LORRE IMPRESSION) Neek, I haf the transport papers. Pleeeeeese, hiiide them foooor me.

DOUG: (LAUGHING) Am I gonna have to change the name of this place to the "Blue Parrot"?

THE THREE MEN LAUGH. EVE SEES THE THREE LAUGHING AS SHE COMES OUT OF THE KITCHEN. SHE IS VISIBLY IRRITATED.

DOUG: (CONT'D) (DOING A SYDNEY GREENSTREET IMPRESSION) Nick, the rumor that I am stor-ing contraband cigarettes is simply not true.

THE THREE MEN LAUGH AGAIN. EVE CROSSES THE ROOM AND STANDS NEXT TO THE TABLE, UNSEEN BY NICK.

NICK: (IN A BOGART VOICE) Listen, Sweetheart, the lives of two people in this crazy world don't add up to a hill of beans...

EVE: (CUTTING OFF NICK) We are booked solid tonight and we have reservations starting in less than an hour. (BEAT) So, gentlemen, I could use some help setting up, if you're done with Masterpiece Theatre.

OUT ON IAN, NICK AND DOUG, STARING AT EVE.

ACT III

JANET'S OFFICE. JANET AND MORGAN. IN PROGRESS.

MORGAN: What ever happened to those new patrolmen that the department was going to hire?

JANET: There's no money in the budget right now. (SIGHING) And if you want to believe the Chief, there won't be any money until sometime in the twenty-first century.

MORGAN: 'Sounds like the standard response. (BEAT) Is there any way that we can beef up the number of uniforms on the street?

JANET: Probably not, unless we shut down every other operation we've got going. So... we have to try harder at educating the public. (BEAT) You know... how to make yourself less of a victim, what to do if you're carjacked...

MORGAN: And if the officers who go out and give safety lectures, stress how important it is to watch out for yourself, maybe we can at least cut down on this nonsense.

MORGAN STANDS UP AND LOOKS AT HIS WATCH.

MORGAN: (CONT'D) Well, another fun-filled shift is over. (BEAT) I better get going, because Candis is making her world famous seafood gumbo tonight.

JANET: Oh, that sounds so delicious. (BEAT) Just like something straight out of the Quarter.

MORGAN: Care to join us? I know Candis won't mind setting out an extra bowl.

JANET: (SIGHING) No, I can't. (POINTING TO THE STACKS OF FILES ON HER DESK) I'm going to be here for awhile.

MORGAN: Okay... but don't stay too long. (BEAT) You know what they say about all work and no play.

JANET: It makes Yamada a mindless drone?

MORGAN CHUCKLES.

JANET: (CONT'D) Now go on, get out of here.

MORGAN WAVES GOOD-BYE, AND WALKS OUT OF THE OFFICE, SHUTTING THE DOOR BEHIND HIM. HOLD ON JANET AS SHE GRIMACES AT HER DESK.

CUT TO: EUTERPE. NICK, DOUG, IAN AND EVE. IN PROGRESS.

NICK: Hello, Evie.

EVE: (TERSELY) Shut up. Don't talk to me.

IAN: Hey, come on...

DOUG: Eve, you'd better adjust that attitude, and do it quickly. (BEAT) I haven't forgotten that ugly scene with Mrs. Johnson, and I'm not about to let it be repeated.

NICK: It's okay, Doug. Don't worry about it. It's not like I'm a paying customer...

DOUG: That's not the point. I don't want my employees allowing their personal problems to cause a disruption to any of my customers.

NICK: Hey, you're the boss. (LOOKING AT EVE) Maybe Eve and I could borrow the office, to talk in private?

EVE: (COLDLY) I have nothing to say to you. (TO DOUG AND IAN) As for you two, I can't believe you're sitting here, cavorting with such a lying, lowlife... creep!

DOUG: Eve, I'm warning you...

EVE: Fine. You don't like my attitude, I'll take it somewhere else. Someone needs to actually work around here!

EVE TURNS AROUND AND WALKS TOWARD THE SOUND BOOTH.

NICK: (THROWING HIS HANDS UP IN EXASPERATION) I can't win. Whatever I say, or don't say, is wrong. Every time I try to reach her, I seem to make things worse.

IAN: (STANDING UP) I'd better go talk to her, try to cool her down...

DOUG: Please do.

IAN FOLLOWS EVE. DOUG TURNS TO NICK.

DOUG: (CONT'D) I know it's difficult right now. But, you can't give up hope.

DOUG PAUSES AND SMILES.

DOUG: (CONT'D) After all, things weren't easy for Rick and Elsa, either.

NICK SHAKES HIS HEAD. BOTH HE AND DOUG TURN TO LOOK ACROSS THE ROOM AT EVE AND IAN.

GO TO: THE SOUND BOOTH. IAN CATCHES UP TO EVE AS SHE REACHES THE SOUND BOOTH.

IAN: Eve, wait up!

EVE: (TURNING TO IAN) What?

IAN: Calm down, I just want to talk to you...

EVE: I'm sick of talking! And I'm sick of being calm! All I want to do is get that... man out of my life. (BEAT) But no, I can't do that, because my boss and my so-called friend are sitting there talking to him like they're all best buddies!

IAN: Eve, please... I don't want to have to choose sides in this.

EVE: Well, that's just tough. That's the way it is.

GO TO: DOUG AND NICK, STILL WATCHING EVE AND IAN.

NICK: Maybe I have too much in common with Rick.

DOUG: Oh?

NICK: Yeah. (BEAT) Elsa took off with another guy, and left Rick alone in Casablanca.

HOLD ON NICK'S DISMAY.

CUT TO: KAYLA'S HOUSE. KAYLA TURNS MARCUS' FACE TOWARDS HER, FORCING HIM TO LOOK HER IN THE EYE.

KAYLA: It's okay, I understand how you feel.

MARCUS: (SURPRISED) You do? (BEAT) I still feel like a heel.

KAYLA: You shouldn't.

KAYLA GIVES MARCUS A TIGHT HUG AND THEN PULLS BACK AND HOLDS BOTH OF HIS HANDS.

KAYLA: (CONT'D) Listen to me. There is no competition between you and Steve, not in my eyes. I love Steve... and I always will. And I want Stephanie to know and remember her father. Steve was, and always will be, a big part of my life.

MARCUS: I know... How can I possibly ever hope to compete with that?

KAYLA: (CHIDING) You didn't let me finish... But things have changed. Steve is my past. You are here... now. You, Marcus Hunter, are my present and my future. I love you.

MARCUS: I love you, too...

KAYLA: I sense a "but" there.

MARCUS: But do you feel that way about me because I was Steve's best friend... because I'm convenient?

KAYLA: Marcus, how can you think such a thing? It's true, you were Steve's best friend. And mine, too. But there's more to it than that.

MARCUS: There is?

KAYLA: Yes, there is. You're a wonderful doctor. Stephanie adores you. You've got a great sense of humor, you make me laugh. You've got a heart of gold, you're caring and warm and...

MARCUS: Hold on there, I'm not a saint! Now I'll have to worry about living up to that description!

KAYLA: (LAUGHING) I know you're not a saint. In fact, (KISSING HIM) I know you're only human. (KISS) A very handsome... (KISS) and sexy one...

MARCUS RETURNS KAYLA'S KISSES. THEY EMBRACE PASSIONATELY. KAYLA PULLS AWAY, SLIGHTLY BREATHLESS.

KAYLA: (CONT'D) Let's stay in tonight...

MARCUS: Mmmm... It's tempting... But no. I promised you a night out on the town and that's what we're going to do.

OUT ON MARCUS' DETERMINATION.

ACT IV

EUTERPE. JACK AND JENNIFER WALK IN. DAVE GREETS THEM.

DAVE: Good evening, Mr. and Mrs. Deveraux.

JACK: Good evening, Dave. We have dinner reservations.

DAVE CHECKS THE RESERVATION BOOK.

DAVE: Yes... It'll be a few minutes while we finish setting up. Would you like to have a seat at the bar in the meantime?

JACK: Sure, I'll be on the third barstool from the right...

JACK AND JENNIFER WALK TO THE BAR AND SIT DOWN. THE BARTENDER, KEN, GREETS THEM.

KEN: What can I get you this evening?

JACK: Scotch and soda.

JENNIFER: White wine.

KEN MAKES/POURS THEIR DRINKS.

JACK: Thank you for suggesting we go out this evening...

JENNIFER: I'm glad Rosie was available to sit with Abby tonight.

JACK: Me, too. (BEAT) Abigail has grown very fond of Rosie.

JENNIFER: I know how she feels. Rosie has a natural way with kids. She makes them feel special.

JACK: (STUDYING JENNIFER'S FACE) Is that how she makes you feel?

JENNIFER: Yes...

JACK: (SOFTLY) Because she was sort of your surrogate mother?

JENNIFER: I think even if my mom had been around, I wouldn't feel any different about Rosie. (BEAT) Didn't you love your nanny?

JACK: My nanny was a stern and stuffy matron. (BEAT) She had all the warmth of a glacier...

JENNIFER: So, I guess you don't want to hire her if Rosie ever quits?

JACK SMILES AND SHAKES HIS HEAD.

JENNIFER: (CONT'D) I'm glad to see you haven't forgotten how to smile.

JACK: Me, too.

JENNIFER: Are you okay?

JACK: Yes. (BEAT) I just needed to get out tonight...

JENNIFER: Because of Steve...

JACK: I've been thinking about him all day.

JENNIFER: And, getting more and more depressed.

JACK: (NODS) I miss him... (SAD SMILE) Wouldn't he laugh to hear that? Old Happy Jack, Billy Jack, Deveraux Johnson missing his big brother.

JENNIFER: I don't think he'd laugh. I think he'd be happy... I think you made him happy... at the end...

JACK: Do you think so?

JENNIFER NODS.

JACK: (CONT'D) I hope so. (BEAT) I still remember the day he... died as if it were yesterday. We thought he was getting better... I even asked him for advice on how I could help you... He gave me a photo of us as kids... told me to believe in myself... and then... then...

JENNIFER TAKES JACK'S HAND.

JENNIFER: I wish I had been there with you. I know how much you needed me.

JACK: I did. (KISSES HER HAND) And I do. But maybe this... I don't know... Maybe it was better that at the end... it was just Steve and me... Together...

HOLD ON JACK.

GO TO: DOUG, AS HE LOOKS OVER HIS SHOULDER AT IAN AND EVE. HE TURNS BACK TO NICK.

DOUG: It's true that Elsa left Rick in Casablanca. (BEAT) But she left him with the start of a beautiful friendship.

NICK: (GRINNING) I'm not sure that French officers are my style.

DOUG: (GRINNING BACK) Will I do?

NICK COCKS HIS HEAD, CONSIDERING.

NICK: I suppose so, in a pinch. But please, no Vichy water!

DOUG RAISES HIS DRINK AND HE AND NICK CLINK GLASSES.

DOUG: Deal!

NICK SWALLOWS SOME OF HIS SCOTCH AND PUTS THE GLASS BACK ON THE TABLE, SHAKING HIS HEAD.

NICK: All joking aside, I really wish Eve would talk to me.

DOUG: I think she will, you just have to give her time.

NICK: That's what everyone says. (BEAT) Maybe I should just let her go, like Rick did with Elsa. You know? Find someone else.

DOUG: There are some beautiful ladies here in Salem. (LOOKING AROUND) Some of them are here at Euterpe tonight, even.

NICK SCANS THE ROOM.

NICK: Yes, they are.

EVE WALKS BY THE TABLE WITH A CLIPBOARD AND MAKES AN OBVIOUS EFFORT TO IGNORE NICK. NICK LOOKS AFTER HER WISTFULLY. HE RUBS HIS TEMPLE AND SIGHS.

NICK: (CONT'D) But I have a feeling none of them could come close to shaking Evie loose from my heart...

HOLD ON NICK'S SADNESS.

GO TO: SHANE, WHO ENTERS, LOOKING SOMEWHAT GLUM. HE IS GREETED BY DAVE.

DAVE: Table for one?

SHANE: Um... No, Dave. Thank you. I think I'll just have a drink at the bar.

DAVE: Very good.

SHANE WALKS OVER TO THE BAR. SEEING JACK AND JENNIFER, HE WALKS OVER TO THEM.

SHANE: Hello, you two.

JENNIFER: Hi, Shane!

JACK: Hello, Shane.

SHANE: So, are you two out for a romantic dinner?

JACK: Yes, we are. (BEAT) My lovely wife tells me that all work and no play makes Jack a very dull boy.

SHANE: (SMILING) And we can't have that, can we?

JENNIFER: Absolutely not! (BEAT) What about you, Shane?

SHANE: Oh, I'm here by myself. (BEAT) Although, I hope I might bump into my daughter.

JACK: (SHIFTING UNCOMFORTABLY) Ah... perhaps we should move, Jennifer. (TO SHANE) No offense, but I'd rather not be in the vicinity of any collision with Eve.

JENNIFER: (SLAPPING JACK'S ARM) Jack!

SHANE: I wouldn't worry too much, Jack. I think Eve has had... other things on her mind, lately.

JACK: I see.

SHANE: (SMILING) But, if she does happen along, I'll try to shield you from her.

JACK: I thank you, Captain. You are a true gentleman.

JENNIFER: (ROLLING HER EYES) Oh, brother...

SHANE: (POINTING TO THE OTHER END OF THE BAR) I'm going to go grab that empty barstool. I'll see you two later.

JENNIFER: 'Bye, Shane.

JACK: Good-bye.

SHANE WALKS DOWN TO THE OTHER END OF THE BAR AND SITS DOWN. KEN APPROACHES SHANE.

KEN: Something to drink, sir?

SHANE: A martini, please.

KEN: (SMILING) Shaken, not stirred?

SHANE: (SMILING, BUT UNAMUSED) I'll leave it to your judgement.

KEN TURNS TO PREPARE SHANE'S DRINK. SHANE TURNS TO LOOK AT THE CROWD. EVE BLOWS BY HIM, NOT NOTICING HIM.

SHANE: (CONT'D) Eve...?

SURPRISED, EVE TURNS TO SHANE.

EVE: (GRUFFLY) Oh... Hi, Dad. Sorry, I didn't see you.

SHANE: Obviously. (BEAT) What's wrong?

EVE: (DEFENSIVE) Nothing. I have to get back to work...

SHANE: Come on, Eve, I can see that something's upsetting you. (MOTIONING TO THE EMPTY STOOL NEXT TO HIM) I'm sure Doug won't mind your taking a short break.

EVE: (RELUCTANTLY) All right...

EVE SITS DOWN. UNNOTICED BY SHANE, KEN PUTS A MARTINI ON THE BAR.

SHANE: Now... talk to me.

EVE: It's Nick.

SHANE: Why am I not surprised?

EVE: He's ruining my life!

SHANE: And how is he doing that?

EVE: I thought that I could come back to work and get away from him. But no. He's popping up here every time I turn around!

SHANE: Well, it is a public establishment...

EVE: (IGNORING SHANE) And now, he's trying to steal all my friends away... (BEAT) Well, my one friend...

SHANE: Eve, honey, I think things would be a lot easier for you if you would stop trying so hard to run away from Nick. (BEAT) Salem's not that big of a town. You're bound to bump into him, no matter how you try to avoid it.

EVE: I just wish he wouldn't act so chummy with Ian.

SHANE: You know, I think both Nick and Ian care about you. And they both just want to see you happy.

EVE: (SUSPICIOUSLY) I'm not so sure.

OUT ON EVE'S SUSPICION.

ACT V

EUTERPE. JACK AND JENNIFER ARE STILL AT THE BAR; THEIR DRINKS ARE NEARLY FINISHED.

JACK: (LOOKING AROUND THE ROOM) Just how long are we going to have to wait?

JENNIFER: Relax, Jack. (BEAT) You know... we didn't finish what we were talking about before.

JACK: Before?

JENNIFER: Before Shane came in. You'll feel better if you just get it out into the open. (BEAT) And it will make me feel better, too.

JACK LETS OUT A LONG SIGH, AND TAKES JENNIFER'S HAND.

JACK: Jennifer, I... I know that you wanted to be with me when Steve... when he was in the hospital. But there's nothing that you should feel bad about; it wasn't your fault that you couldn't get home. (BEAT) It was Law...

JENNIFER SHAKES A FINGER AT JACK.

JENNIFER: Didn't we agree to never bring that name up in conversation again?

JACK GRINS SLIGHTLY AT HIS WIFE.

JACK: Yes, yes we did. (BEAT) And now that he's out of our lives for good, it will be a much easier task.

JACK FINISHES OFF HIS DRINK, AND MOTIONS FOR KEN TO BRING HIM ANOTHER.

JACK: (CONT'D) The last thing that Steve and I talked about was you.

JENNIFER TIGHTENS HER GRIP ON HIS HAND.

JACK: (CONT'D) We talked about how much I loved you, and tried to figure out the best way to get you out of New York... I told him that I needed his help... but he thought that I could handle this on my own. (LONG BEAT) I just wish that I'd told him just how much I loved him.

JENNIFER: He knew, Jack. (BEAT) Steve knew that you loved him, even before you knew it.

JACK: You're probably right. (BEAT) Steve knew me better than anyone else in the world, except you.

JENNIFER: And I know that he would be very proud of his little brother. (BEAT) You've had so much success in the past few years... Deveraux Publishing, our marriage...

JACK SMILES.

JENNIFER: (CONT'D) And Abby! I can see Steve now, spoiling her rotten. (BEAT) You and Adrienne and Jo are close, my family loves you, and Kayla... (LONG BEAT) Steve would be happy that the two of you can now call each other friend.

JACK: And none of this would have been possible without you, Jennifer. (BEAT) It's your belief in me that kept me from turning back into some... Harper clone.

JENNIFER: As long as you believe in yourself Jack, you'll never lose my faith.

HOLD ON JENNIFER'S TRUST.

GO TO: KAYLA AND MARCUS, AS THEY ARRIVE AND STAND IN THE DOOR WAITING TO BE SEATED. JACK AND JENNIFER WAVE FROM THE BAR. MARCUS SAYS SOMETHING TO DAVE AND HE GOES WITH KAYLA TO JOIN JACK AND JENNIFER.

KAYLA: Hi! (LOOKING AROUND) It looks like everyone in town is here tonight!

JENNIFER: It sure does.

MARCUS LOOKS AT THE GLASSES IN FRONT OF JACK AND JENNIFER AND SIGNALS THE BARTENDER.

MARCUS: I see you two have been here a while, we'll have to play catch up.

JACK: I felt the need of something a little stronger than usual... especially today...

MARCUS: I hear you, Jack.

JENNIFER: (TO KAYLA, CONCERNED) Are you all right?

KAYLA: Yes, thanks. I guess we've all been thinking about Steve today, haven't we? (BEAT) Jack, I saw you at the cemetery this morning.

JACK: (EMBARRASSED) Did you?

JENNIFER PATS JACK'S LEG.

KAYLA: I would have said hello, but I thought you'd like some privacy. I waited in the car until you were gone.

JACK: Thanks, I appreciate that. But it would have been okay if you came over.

KAYLA AND JACK SHARE A LOOK OF UNDERSTANDING, THEN KAYLA SMILES.

KAYLA: Listen to us, getting all maudlin! If Steve were here, he'd hand us our heads!

MARCUS: Or start playing that harmonica.

JENNIFER PUTS A HAND OVER HER EYE.

JENNIFER: (MIMICKING STEVE) Whatsamatter? You don't like my harmonica, homey? (TURNING TO JACK) What about you, Billy Jack?

THE FOUR OF THEM LAUGH.

JACK: I think Steve would be happy to see the family doing so well.

KAYLA: And getting along, too.

HOLD ON THE FOUR REMINISCING ABOUT HAPPIER TIMES.

GO TO: SHANE AND EVE.

SHANE: We all want what's best for you, Eve.

EVE: I hope you're not including Nick... If he truly cared, he would never... Oh, what's the use? We've been over this before, and amazingly, you're still on Nick's side.

SHANE: No one's chosen sides, love, I promise. I just want you to be happy.

EVE: Happy. I'll have to think way back to remember that one...

SHANE: (HELPLESSLY) Eve....

EVE SEES DOUG APPROACHING.

EVE: Oops, here comes the boss. I should probably get back to work before he jumps all over my case, too...

SHANE: Promise you'll come talk to me again before I leave?

EVE: Yeah, Dad, sure.

EVE RUSHES OFF, AS DOUG WALKS UP TO SHANE.

DOUG: Was it something I... said?

SHANE: There's nothing any of us can say to Eve, these days.

DOUG: You're right about that.

SHANE: It's just so hard... I want more than anything to make her feel better... but I don't know how. Or even if I can.

DOUG: You may not be able to do it, Shane. I suspect she'll have to work this out herself. It'll take time, but eventually it'll happen.

SHANE: Good advice, Doug. Thanks. It's especially helpful coming from someone else who's raised a daughter.

DOUG: There is that. (BEAT) And Eve reminds me a lot of someone, a certain fair lady who's worked through many problems in her life, as well.

SHANE: That's quite a comfort, Doug. Much appreciated.

THERE IS A QUIET BEAT, AS DOUG STUDIES SHANE INTENTLY.

DOUG: There's something else, isn't there?

SHANE: Something else?

DOUG: You've got something on your mind besides Eve, though that certainly is enough to have on your mind. What's up?

SHANE: I'm a bit bothered by the fact that there are still people in Salem who blame me....

DOUG: For what?

SHANE: For Steve's murder. For Nick's, what shall we say? Death and resurrection. For the I.S.A.'s handling of the whole mess... Certain people still think I knew, that I could have done something.

OUT ON SHANE'S FRUSTRATION.

ACT VI

EUTERPE. JACK AND JENNIFER HAVE BEEN SEATED AT THEIR TABLE, AS HAVE MARCUS AND KAYLA. JENNIFER IS LOOKING AT THE MENU. JACK IS BUSY WATCHING MARCUS AND KAYLA, WHO ARE HOLDING HANDS AND KISSING.

JENNIFER: Hmmm... I'm having trouble deciding what to order. (BEAT) What are you going to have, Jack?

JACK, STILL WATCHING MARCUS AND KAYLA, DOES NOT RESPOND.

JENNIFER: (CONT'D) Jack? (BEAT) Hello, Earth to Jack!

JACK: (LOOKING BACK AT JENNIFER) What...? I'm sorry, what did you say?

JENNIFER: What was it that had you so mesmerized?

JENNIFER TURNS AND LOOKS OVER HER SHOULDER. SHE SEES MARCUS AND KAYLA LAUGHING. JENNIFER TURNS BACK TO JACK.

JENNIFER: (CONT'D) Why are you so engrossed with Marcus and Kayla?

JACK: I wasn't "engrossed"...

JENNIFER: You didn't hear a word I was saying to you.

JACK: I was... I was...

JENNIFER: You were engrossed.

JACK: I'm just a little... surprised, that's all.

JENNIFER: Surprised? About what?

JACK: Marcus and Kayla. (BEAT) I didn't realize their relationship had gotten so... serious.

JENNIFER: It was pretty obvious to me.

JACK: Yes, but you have those Alice Horton genes. You probably have some kind of "romance E.S.P.," or something.

JENNIFER LAUGHS.

JACK: (CONT'D) No, I did have my suspicions about those two. (BEAT) But I wasn't sure. Until now.

JENNIFER: Does it bother you?

JACK: Bother me? Why would it bother me?

JENNIFER: Seeing Kayla with someone else... after Steve.

JACK: No. No, it doesn't bother me. (BEAT) I'm happy for them.

JENNIFER: Really?

JACK: Yes. I'm glad that Kayla's been able to find someone else that can make her happy. Steve... Steve would have wanted that for her.

JENNIFER: Yeah, he would.

JACK: And, if she is going to find someone new, what better man could she find than Marcus, my own best man?

JENNIFER: (SMILING) Very true, very true.

JACK: Kayla's a wonderful woman. She deserves all the happiness she can find.

JENNIFER: I hope she can find as much happiness as we have.

JACK: (PICKING UP HIS GLASS) We have found our share, haven't we?

JENNIFER: We certainly have.

JACK: (RAISING HIS GLASS) To us. And our happiness.

JENNIFER PICKS UP HER GLASS OF WINE AND CLINKS GLASSES WITH JACK.

JENNIFER: To us.

HOLD ON JACK AND JENNIFER.

GO TO: KAYLA AND MARCUS.

KAYLA: And, Stephanie says, "Mommy, a piece of fuzz doesn't have legs!"

MARCUS AND KAYLA LAUGH.

MARCUS: She's got a natural comedic timing. (BEAT) She'll be the next Gracie Allen.

KAYLA: Brady Black can be her George Burns.

MARCUS: She's got a thing for Brady?

KAYLA: As much of a thing as any four year old can have. (BEAT) So, how's your dinner?

MARCUS: To tell the truth, I'm enjoying your company so much, I haven't tasted a thing.

KAYLA: Don't let Aki hear that. (BEAT) He has a reputation for handling those knives in the kitchen.

MARCUS LEANS OVER AND KISSES KAYLA.

KAYLA: (CONT'D) What was that for?

MARCUS: For looking out for me. (BEAT) Does it bother you?

KAYLA: Looking out for you?

MARCUS: No, silly. (BEAT) Being affectionate in public.

KAYLA: Why would it? I am proud to be seen with such a distinguished gentleman.

MARCUS: Distinguished?

KAYLA: Is that a bad word?

MARCUS: I usually think of distinguished as someone... more gray at the temples.

KAYLA: Like Cary Grant?

MARCUS: Yeah. (BEAT) Telling a man he's distinguished, is kinda like telling a woman she's "handsome."

KAYLA LOOKS AT MARCUS IN MOCK HORROR.

KAYLA: Ugh!

MARCUS: There's nothing wrong with it. (BEAT) It just implies a certain... maturity.

KAYLA: Okay. (BEAT) So, if you're not "distinguished", how should I describe you?

MARCUS: Tall. Dark. Handsome.

KAYLA: That's too cliché.

MARCUS: How 'bout "studmuffin"?

KAYLA: Fine. (BEAT) I'm proud to be seen with such a studmuffin.

MARCUS: (LAUGHING) So, you think I'm a studmuffin, huh?

KAYLA: No. (BEAT) You think you're a studmuffin. I think you're distinguished.

MARCUS: And, may I say you look very handsome tonight?

KAYLA: (LAUGHING) Touché. (BEAT) My studmuffin.

MARCUS: Well, wait 'til I get you home tonight. (BEAT) I'll show you who's a studmuffin.

HOLD ON MARCUS SMILING MISCHIEVOUSLY AT KAYLA.

CUT TO: CARRIE'S APARTMENT. CARRIE UNLOCKS THE DOOR AND ENTERS. SHE PULLS THE KEY OUT OF THE LOCK, CLOSES THE DOOR AND LOCKS IT. SHE TAKES OFF HER COAT AS SHE WALKS ACROSS THE ROOM. SHE TOSSES THE COAT ON THE COUCH. SHE GOES INTO THE KITCHEN, GRABS A SODA, AND SITS DOWN AT THE TABLE. SHE OPENS HER SOCIOLOGY BOOK, BUT QUICKLY SLAMS IT SHUT.

CARRIE: I can not do this right now.

CARRIE GETS UP, AND WALKS OVER TO THE WINDOW.

CARRIE: (CONT'D) Maybe Grandpa and Grandma are right... I need to take a few chances every now and then. Or something... anything to break out of this rut I'm in. (BEAT) Maybe a trip to Colorado might help; seeing Dad and Marlena and the twinners would be nice. (LONG BEAT) Or maybe I should call Mom... If anyone knows about breaking out of ruts, it's Anna DiMera.

CARRIE WALKS AWAY FROM THE WINDOW, AND BACK TO THE COUCH. SHE PLOPS DOWN ON IT, KNOCKING HER COAT ON THE FLOOR.

CARRIE: (CONT'D) (SIGHING) Face it Carrie... when it comes right down to it, you're the only one who can decide what to with your life.

OUT ON CARRIE'S CONFUSION.

ACT VII

EUTERPE. DOUG WALKS ON STAGE AND SPEAKS INTO THE MICROPHONE.

DOUG: Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. We've got a special treat for you tonight. Our very own Eve Donovan has agreed to sing for us. Without further ado, let's welcome Eve.

APPLAUSE, WHILE EVE WALKS ON STAGE. SHE SIGNALS TO MARTY, WHO BEGINS TO PLAY THE PIANO. EVE SINGS, "THE MAN I LOVE," BY GERSHWIN. A FEW COUPLES GET UP TO DANCE.

GO TO: KAYLA AND MARCUS, WHO ARE SHARING A ROMANTIC DANCE. THEY GAZE DREAMILY INTO EACH OTHER'S EYES.

GO TO: JACK AND JENNIFER. THEY DANCE CLOSELY. JACK SINGS SOFTLY INTO JENNIFER'S EAR, WHILE JENNIFER SMILES.

GO TO: NICK, SITTING AT THE BAR. HE LOOKS AT EVE, AND SMILES. EVE CONTINUES TO SING, TRYING NOT TO LOOK IN NICK'S DIRECTION. EVERY SO OFTEN, EVE STEALS A GLANCE IN NICK'S DIRECTION.

GO TO: SHANE, SITTING ALONE AT THE BAR. HE SMILES AT EVE, BUT CONTINUES TO LOOK SOMEWHAT DEJECTED.

CUT TO: JANET'S OFFICE. JANET SITS AT HER DESK, WORKING. SHE LOOKS UP BRIEFLY FROM HER WORK, AND SIGHS.

CUT TO: EUTERPE. SHANE LOOKS DOWN AT HIS DRINK, AND SIGHS.

GO TO: DOUG, STANDING BY THE SIDE OF THE STAGE. HE SMILES, AS EVE FINISHES SINGING.

GO TO: NICK. HE BLOWS A KISS IN EVE'S DIRECTION. EVE NOTICES, BUT IGNORES NICK'S GESTURE. SHE BOWS TO THE APPLAUSE, AND WALKS OFFSTAGE. OUT ON EVE, WALKING OFFSTAGE, WITH TEARS COMING DOWN HER FACE. FADE TO BLACK.
