DOUG AND JULIE'S DINING ROOM. DOUG AND JULIE ARE DRINKING COFFEE AND EATING CROISSANTS AT THE TABLE.
DOUG: Fair Lady, do you think we should have stayed at the hospital? (BEAT) Suppose Robert needs us.
JULIE: Darling, we'll be no good to Robert if we both drop from exhaustion.
DOUG: I suppose...
JULIE: And, I was getting tired of dragging myself around the Hospital in that Cleopatra costume.
DOUG: I did get a couple of odd looks for my Zorro cape.
JULIE: I think we both needed a couple of hours sleep and a shower.
DOUG: What would I do without you to watch over me?
JULIE: (SMILING) I have no idea...
DOUG: And I never want to find out.
HOLD ON DOUG AND JULIE.
CUT TO: JACK'S OFFICE. JACK IS WORKING AT HIS COMPUTER. HE'S TYPING AT A FURIOUS PACE, AND BITING DOWN HARD ON THE PENCIL CLENCHED IN HIS TEETH. JENNIFER IS ON THE TELEPHONE, TAKING NOTES. VERN, RUNNING, ENTERS THE OPEN OFFICE DOOR.
VERN: (BREATHLESS) Jack! (BEAT) I... got..
AS VERN STRUGGLES TO CATCH HIS BREATH, JACK EXTRICATES THE PENCIL FROM HIS MOUTH, AND LOOKS UP AT VERN.
JACK: You got what, Vern?
VERN: The early tally from district 4. The mayor's race is a tie. (BEAT) If this keeps up, we're looking at a runoff.
JENNIFER: Thanks.
JENNIFER HANGS UP THE TELEPHONE.
JACK: Well?
JENNIFER: Okay... the national scoop. (BEAT) Feinstein and Huffington are in a dead heat for the California Senate seat... They're even talking re-count...
JACK: There's another million for someone to spend...
JENNIFER: And Wilson is leading handily in that Governor's race. Apparently the spin doctors are already talking Wilson for President in '96...
VERN: Hmmm... just like you predicted, Jack.
JACK: Actually, I think Nixon predicted it first...
VERN: Isn't he dead?
JACK: (IGNORING VERN) How about Virginia?
JENNIFER: Robb...
JACK: I guess that anti-North comment by Mrs. Reagan helped Robb... (BEAT) What else?
JENNIFER: That's about it for now... there's a lot of races that are still too close to call.
JACK: It's a start. (BEAT) I can finish up my editorial from that.
RICHARD ENTERS THE DOORWAY, AND TAPS ON THE OPEN DOOR.
RICHARD: Jack, if you've got a second... (BEAT) I need you to answer a Midsummer question.
JACK: Come in Richard. (BEAT) Vern was just leaving to go check on the mayor's race, weren't you Vern?
VERN: (SALUTING JACK) Aye aye, Captain.
VERN PASSES RICHARD AS HE HEADS BACK OUT INTO THE NEWSROOM.
RICHARD: I know that you're busy today, but Julie's still not in and I wanted to check a couple of things with you.
JACK: I saw her this morning when Jennifer and I stopped by the hospital. (BEAT) Her energies are focused on the family right now. We can take care of the business.
RICHARD: Then should I cancel the advertisers meeting that's scheduled for tomorrow afternoon?
JACK: Definitely. (OPENING HIS APPOINTMENT BOOK) See if they can meet next Tuesday morning. (BEAT) If Julie is still unavailable then, I'll take the meeting.
RICHARD: Okay. And I can handle the rest of her meetings this week.
JACK: Good. (BEAT) I know I don't say things like this enough... (LOOKS AT JENNIFER) But I want to thank you for the great job you're doing pinch-hitting for Julie. I know she appreciates it.
RICHARD: Always glad to lend a helping hand... Julie's a wonderful boss and now, I think, a good friend. And I know she's worried.
JENNIFER: She is... Doug, Julie and Robert have been friends for over 20 years...
RICHARD: How is Robert?
JENNIFER: He's still critical; Dad isn't sure if he's going to make it.
RICHARD: I don't really know the man well, but we both (GRIN) performed at the Benefit and I've talked to him at the club.
JACK: And more. Don't forget the biggest social event of the season.
RICHARD: Ah yes... Abigail's birthday party.
JENNIFER SWATS AT JACK WITH AN EMPTY FILE FOLDER.
RICHARD: Anyway... he always seemed like a nice man. It's obvious that Doug and Julie think the world of him. (BEAT) And that they'd be devastated if he didn't recover.
HOLD ON RICHARD.
CUT TO: JANET'S OFFICE. JANET IS SITTING AT HER DESK, SWAMPED IN PAPERWORK. SOMEONE KNOCKS ON HER DOOR, AND JANET GLANCES UP FROM HER WORK.
JANET: Come in!
JOHN OPENS THE DOOR AND WALKS IN.
JOHN: 'Hope I didn't catch you at a bad time.
JANET: It's nothing but the same old paperwork mess.
JOHN: I'm all too familiar with that.
JANET: So you are. (BEAT) Speaking of, it's been a while since the former commander has been around these parts.
JOHN: Commander... That feels like another lifetime.
JANET: What brings you by today?
JOHN: I've got a favor to ask.
JOHN REACHES INTO HIS POCKET, AND PULLS OUT THE KEY. HE HANDS IT TO JANET, AND SHE EXAMINES IT.
JANET: What does this unlock?
JOHN: My past.
JANET LOOKS AT JOHN, PUZZLED.
JANET: Care to elaborate?
JOHN: I'm afraid I don't know much beyond that. I was wondering if your people can run some checks on it... find out what kind of key it is.
JANET HANDS THE KEY BACK TO JOHN AND SHAKES HER HEAD.
JANET: No can do. I'm sorry, Mr. Black.
JOHN SQUINTS ONE EYE, AND RAISES AND EYEBROW AT JANET.
JOHN: Did you just say that you won't help me?
JANET: You heard correctly. This isn't police business and I'm not about to waste the taxpayers money on your personal queries.
OUT ON JOHN'S SHOCK.
DOUG AND JULIE'S DINING ROOM. DOUG AND JULIE. IN PROGRESS.
JULIE: Darling, when is CJ's flight coming in?
DOUG: (GLANCING AT THE CLOCK) Not for a few hours. He said he'd call from the airport.
THE DOORBELL RINGS. JULIE STANDS.
JULIE: I wonder who that could be? Were you expecting anyone?
DOUG: No one that I can think of.
JULIE WALKS TO THE FOYER.
CUT TO: DOUG AND JULIE'S LIVING ROOM/FOYER. JULIE OPENS THE DOOR. A HAGGARD AND PALE CJ, STANDS AT THE DOORWAY. HE CARRIES A SMALL VALISE. HE LOOKS NOT UNLIKE A LITTLE BOY LOST.
JULIE: CJ! My goodness!
CJ: Hello, Julie. Hope you don't mind... I just got in and... I didn't want to go to the Hospital alone...
JULIE: You poor darling...
JULIE PUTS HER ARMS AROUND CJ AND THEY HUG. HE HOLDS HER TIGHTLY, THEN THEY PULL APART.
JULIE: (CONT'D) We didn't expect you so soon.
CJ: I managed to catch an earlier flight. I know I should have called, but...
DOUG WALKS INTO THE FOYER.
DOUG: Julie, who's at the...?
DOUG SEES CJ.
DOUG: (CONT'D) CJ...
DOUG AND CJ HUG.
DOUG: (CONT'D) It's been so long...
CJ BREAKS THE HUG WITH DOUG.
CJ: Too long... And you don't know how happy I am to see you two. I needed to see you...
CJ IS NEAR TEARS. THE STRAIN OF WORRYING ABOUT HIS FATHER AND THE RIGORS OF A QUICKLY ARRANGED AND LONG FLIGHT ARE STARTING TO SHOW.
DOUG: You look exhausted...
JULIE: Yes, you do. Oh... what kind of godparents are we?
JULIE PUTS HER ARM AROUND CJ'S WAIST AND LEADS HIM TOWARDS THE DINING ROOM.
JULIE: (CONT'D) Come into the dining room, rest, eat...
CJ FOLLOWS DOUG AND JULIE BACK INTO THE DINING ROOM.
CUT TO: DOUG AND JULIE'S DINING ROOM. CJ TAKES A SEAT, WHILE JULIE POURS HIM SOME COFFEE.
JULIE: And breakfast will be ready in minutes...
CJ TAKES A SIP OF COFFEE.
DOUG: Can we get you anything else?
CJ: Just one thing... news. How is my father?
HOLD ON CJ'S WORRY.
CUT TO: JANET'S OFFICE. JANET AND JOHN. IN PROGRESS.
JOHN: (INDIGNANT) Come on, Captain... after all I've done around this Cop Shop, can't you cut me some slack and do this one favor for me? (BEAT) I'd never put any stock in those rumors of you being a cold, heartless...
JANET: (CUTTING HIM OFF) Mr. Black, I suggest that you stop while it's only a sock in your mouth. If you had allowed me to finish my sentence, you would have heard me say: "why don't you go to Shane Donovan for help?" He certainly has more resources available to him than I do here in the Salem P.D.
JOHN, EMBARRASSED AT HIS RASH JUDGEMENT, STARES AT HIS FEET, FIDGETS WITH HIS COLLAR AND CLEARS HIS THROAT.
JOHN: (GOING FOR THE SAVE) So the rumors are true...
JANET RAISES HER RIGHT EYEBROW AT HIM, BUT DOES NOT BREAK HER STARE.
JOHN: (CONT'D) That you're smart, helpful, considerate, and know when to tell the feeble-minded to shut up.
JANET: (SMILE) I think I can live with that reputation.
JANET STARTS TO LAUGH, AND JOHN JOINS IN. OUT ON THEIR LAUGHTER.
DOUG AND JULIE'S DINING ROOM. DOUG, JULIE AND CJ. IN PROGRESS.
CJ: How is he, Doug? How's my father?
DOUG: The doctors don't really know anything, yet.
CJ: You must know something.
JULIE: (BLUNT, OF NECESSITY) Your father survived the surgery. Now he's in CCU... He's listed in critical condition. Anything can happen in the next 48-72 hours.
CJ: And Bill Horton is the doctor on the case?
JULIE: Yes, Uncle Bill is one of the doctors... He called in Dr. Webber, the Hospital's leading cardiologist, for the surgery.
CJ: At least I know he's getting good care.
DOUG: The finest. We made sure of that.
CJ: Thank you. And thank you for calling me right away. You've always been there for me and my father.
DOUG: Robert is my oldest and dearest friend. I'd do anything for him... and his son.
CJ: And I know he feels the same about you.
JULIE LOOKS AT THE TWO MEN.
CJ: (CONT'D) (SAD SMILE) You know... my earliest memories of Salem are of my father and "Uncle" Doug singing together at the Club... (BEAT) What if... what if...
CJ CANNOT CONTINUE.
DOUG: He's going to be fine. He has to be fine. Believe it. And believe that sooner than you think, we'll be singing our old songs... again...
HOLD ON DOUG.
CUT TO: JACK'S OFFICE. JENNIFER, JACK & RICHARD. IN PROGRESS.
JENNIFER: Robert was always around when I was a child, he's like another uncle to me.
JACK: He's a fine man. I do hope he recovers.
JENNIFER: And Robert's son, CJ, is like my cousin. He even came to see me at boarding school.
RICHARD: (LAUGHING) Ah, the roguish CJ! Now him I know a little about. Julie's shared bits of his letters. Is he coming home?
JENNIFER: Yes, Doug said he got the first flight possible out of Florence. I imagine he's here by now.
VERN COMES IN TRAILING SHEETS OF PAPER.
VERN: We've got preliminary predictions from Districts 3, 8, 12, and 25.
JACK, JENNIFER AND RICHARD STRAIGHTEN UP. JACK MOVES SOME FILES ON HIS DESK ASIDE.
JACK: All right, spread them out here, Vern, and we'll have a look.
JENNIFER: (TO RICHARD) I guess that's our cue to get back to work.
RICHARD: Don't worry about things down at Midsummer, Jack. I'll hold down the fort until Julie gets back.
JACK LOOKS UP FROM THE SHEETS OF PAPER ON HIS DESK.
JACK: I know you can do it, Richard. And I have every confidence that you will.
RICHARD GRINS AND SKETCHES A SALUTE BEFORE HEADING OUT THE DOOR. HOLD ON JENNIFER, JACK AND VERN GOING OVER ELECTION PREDICTIONS.
CUT TO: DONOVAN LIVING ROOM. SHANE IS SITTING AT THE DESK, GOING OVER SOME PAPERWORK. JOHN ENTERS AND CLEARS HIS THROAT.
SHANE: (NOT LOOKING UP) Yes, Simmons?
JOHN: Not Simmons. I convinced him that after all this time, I probably didn't need to be announced.
SHANE: Right you are.
SHANE RISES TO GREET JOHN.
SHANE: (CONT'D) Good to see you. Would you like some coffee? Tea?
JOHN: Thanks, Shane, but no. I can only stay a few minutes. I think if I don't show up at the office today, Leigh will send one of your I.S.A. pals to track me down.
SHANE: Well, then, what can I do for you?
SHANE GESTURES FOR JOHN TO SIT ON THE COUCH, AND SHANE JOINS HIM.
JOHN: Well, as I think I've mentioned, I've recently begun regaining parts of my memory... mostly things related to Carly... Katerina...
SHANE: I see...
JOHN: So I decided to go through some of her belongings and see if I could find any clues to our past...
SHANE: And did you?
JOHN: I hope so. I found this...
JOHN SHOWS SHANE THE KEY.
SHANE: May I?
JOHN HANDS SHANE THE KEY.
SHANE: (CONT'D) Hmmmm... small... looks like standard issue of some sort... What do you think it opens?
JOHN: It's too small for a house or vehicle... I'm thinking it might be for a safety deposit box... or maybe a locker somewhere... the airport, train station...
SHANE: (HANDS KEY BACK TO JOHN) I suspect you're right. But what do you expect to find?
JOHN: A clue. Carly and I share part of a past, and if I can find something, anything, about hers, there's a good chance I can find out something about mine.
OUT ON JOHN'S INTENSITY.
SMALL NURSES' STATION / LOUNGE. BILL IS WORKING ON HIS CHARTS. THE ELEVATOR DOOR OPENS. DOUG, JULIE, AND CJ STEP OFF. THEY SEE BILL AND WALK OVER TO HIM.
JULIE: Uncle Bill...
JULIE AND BILL HUG.
BILL: Doug... Julie...
DOUG: Bill, you remember CJ, don't you? Robert's son.
BILL: (SHAKING CJ'S HAND) Of course. I'll bet you weren't any more than a teenager the last time I saw you.
CJ: Dr. Horton, it's a pleasure to see you again. I think the last time we met, I was trying to hide a huge crush I had on your wife, Laura.
BILL: Laura had that affect on men. (BILL LOOKS UNCOMFORTABLE)
CJ: (REMEMBERING LAURA IS IN A MENTAL HOSPITAL) Oh, I'm sorry. (BEAT) Dr. Horton, it is such a comfort to know that my father is in your care. How is he doing?
BILL: I wish I had better news for you, CJ. It's still touch and go. The next couple of days will tell.
CJ: I was hoping for better news.
JULIE PUTS HER ARM AROUND HIM.
CJ: (CONT'D) Can I see him?
BILL: Of course, but only for a few a minutes.
BILL PICKS UP THE NURSES' STATION PHONE AND DIALS.
JULIE: (TO CJ) Are you sure you're ready to see him, darling?
CJ: I didn't fly all this way to sit in a waiting room. I need to talk to my father and let him know I'm here.
BILL HANGS UP THE PHONE.
BILL: Okay, CJ. I talked to Nurse Castillo in CCU. She'll be right down to escort you to your father's room.
CJ: Thanks, Dr. Horton.
BILL: You can only stay 15 minutes.
CJ: I understand. Thank you.
NURSE CASTILLO ARRIVES TO ESCORT CJ TO ROBERT'S ROOM.
JULIE: Darling, we'll wait for you in the lounge.
CJ: I'll be back.
HOLD ON CJ LEAVING WITH NURSE CASTILLO.
CUT TO: DONOVAN LIVING ROOM. SHANE AND JOHN. IN PROGRESS.
SHANE: Exactly what type of clue are you looking for, John?
JOHN: I'm not sure... I'm hoping maybe her diaries...
SHANE: Carly's diaries? Did Bo tell you that she kept a diary?
JOHN: No. They're something I remembered...
SHANE: Why would you think that they still exist? Given what we now know about Carly, wouldn't she have destroyed them?
JOHN: Maybe... But, given what I remember about her, I think she would've kept them somewhere.
SHANE: For blackmail purposes?
JOHN: Maybe, but I think it had more to do with ego. (BEAT) The important thing is, that I find these diaries. If I do find them, then maybe I'll find all the pieces to my past.
HOLD ON JOHN.
CUT TO: UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL / ROBERT'S ROOM. ROBERT IS ON THE BED UNCONSCIOUS. HE IS PALE AND DRAWN. THERE ARE TUBES UP HIS NOSE. A TUBE IN HIS MOUTH. WIRES TAPED ON HIS CHEST. AN IV IN HIS ARM. THERE ARE VARIOUS MECHANICAL DEVICES CLICKING AND BEEPING. WE SEE CJ PEERING THROUGH THE OBSERVATION WINDOW. HE IS VISIBLY SHAKEN BY THE SIGHT OF ROBERT SO HELPLESS. CJ SLOWLY PUSHES OPEN THE DOOR AND CAUTIOUSLY ENTERS THE ROOM. HE WALKS AROUND THE BED, NOT WANTING TO BELIEVE THAT THIS COULD BE THE ENERGETIC, BUBBLY "PAPA" HE WAS USED TO SEEING. CJ PULLS UP A CHAIR TO THE SIDE OF THE BED AND TAKES ROBERT'S HAND.
CJ: Papa, it's me... it's Charles... You've had a heart attack. (BEAT) I guess it's no surprise that a heart as big as yours might finally grow tired... (CJ SMILES WEAKLY) Doug and Julie are nearly beside themselves with worry. You know how much they love you. You are going to have to get better quickly so you can apologize for frightening them so badly. (CJ INHALES DEEPLY, FIGHTING BACK HIS OVERPOWERING EMOTIONS) And when you get better, where will we go for your convalescence? (BEAT) I know how much you love the Riviera. You can sit in the sun on the beach and look at the pretty girls... Hmmm... Maybe all those pretty girls in bikinis would not be so good on your heart, eh? (CJ CHUCKLES SELF-CONSCIOUSLY.) If not the Riviera, then I will take you anywhere you want to go. Just get better, Papa. You have to get well. There is so much we need to do, yet. (TEARS BEGIN TO FALL DOWN CJ'S CHEEKS) There are so many places I want to go with you. (CJ LEANS FORWARD AND PUTS HIS HEAD ON ROBERT'S SHOULDER.) You have to get well... I love you.
OUT ON CJ'S PAIN.
SMALL NURSES' STATION / LOUNGE. BILL AND JULIE ARE SITTING, WHILE DOUG, WORRIED, PACES BACK AND FORTH.
JULIE: Darling, I know you're concerned about Robert, but there's something else bothering you, isn't there?
DOUG STOPS AND MANAGES A SMALL SMILE.
DOUG: Not only are you the most beautiful woman in the world, but you're also the most perceptive.
JULIE: Only about you. (BEAT) What's wrong?
DOUG: I'm thinking about CJ. Robert's the only real family that he has.
BILL: What about Robert's sister, Suzanne?
JULIE: Suzanne is getting on in years and in frail health... Although she blamed the rail strikes in Paris for not coming to Salem, CJ told us she really wasn't strong enough to travel...
DOUG: That's what worries me. If something happens to Robert, CJ will be alone... without family...
DOUG STANDS BEHIND JULIE, AND PLACES ONE OF HIS HANDS ON HER SHOULDER.
JULIE: He won't be alone, he has us...
HOLD ON A SOMBER DOUG AND JULIE.
CUT TO: RICHARD'S OFFICE. RICHARD IS LOOKING AT A HUGE STACK OF PAPERWORK, WHEN THE PHONE RINGS. TWO-WAY.
RICHARD: Hello?
JULIE: Richard, darling, it's Julie.
RICHARD: Julie... How are you? How is Robert?
JULIE: I'm fine. As to Robert, no real change, I'm afraid. We're all waiting, hoping he'll improve.
RICHARD: Is there anything I can do?
JULIE: Thank you for the offer, but we're doing all right. Robert's son, CJ, has just arrived.
RICHARD: Good. I'm sure seeing his son will be great medicine for Robert.
JULIE: We hope so. But I'm afraid it means I'll be at the hospital most of the day. I don't want to leave CJ.
RICHARD: And that's as it should be. You stay with your family.
JULIE: Richard, you are an angel, but I feel horrible about leaving you to cope with everything.
RICHARD: It's fine. Don't worry...
JULIE: Hmmm... I think I can see your halo beginning to form even over the phone lines...
RICHARD: (LAUGHS) Halo? Hmmm... you're the first woman I've known who's ever described me that way. Should I take it as a compliment?
JULIE: As it was intended.
RICHARD: Okay... So boss, tell me, is there anything special that you need done?
JULIE: Polishing the halo?
RICHARD: Someone has to...
JULIE: Okay, let's see... I made some notes (LOOKING AT HER FILOFAX) Please call the printer about that last issue. I wasn't pleased with the way the copy smudged on page 43. And talk to Thea about that article on Aerobics after 60. I'm not confident she'll have it ready by deadline. Oh, and make sure to cancel my staff meeting for tomorrow morning... and...
RICHARD: Whoa, boss. Gotta tell you. Been there, done that.
JULIE: Pardon?
RICHARD: The printer apologizes and is giving us a slight price break next issue. Thea's article is with the proofer, and I thought I would chair the staff meeting tomorrow, if you're not available. 'Sound all right?
JULIE: Richard... I'm speechless. You are a wonder, a marvel, a veritable master...
RICHARD: Please... please... (WICKED GRIN) just toss flowers... or cash...
JULIE: Don't worry, I'll remember to speak to the boss about an immediate raise for you.
RICHARD: Actually, I was joking...
JULIE: No, you deserve it. I couldn't have coped with this without you.
RICHARD: That's what friends are for...
JULIE: Richard, darling, of all the lovely things I could call you, friend is definitely at the top of the list...
RICHARD: Friend and not incredibly sexy and irresistible dance partner?
JULIE: You rogue, you are incorrigible.
RICHARD: (GRIN) I try... (BEAT) But seriously, Julie, you just take care of yourself... and Doug, CJ and Robert. And rest assured, Midsummer will be fine until you can come back.
JULIE: Thank you, Richard. It does help knowing my "baby" is in good hands...
RICHARD'S OTHER LINE RINGS.
RICHARD: Well, by the sound of it, your baby needs to be fed. Take care, and call me if you need anything.
JULIE: Good-bye, darling, and thanks again.
RICHARD: Bye, Julie
RICHARD DISCONNECTS HER LINE AND TAKES THE OTHER CALL.
RICHARD: (CONT'D) Hunt... Midsummer madness...
HOLD ON RICHARD.
CUT TO: SMALL NURSES' STATION/LOUNGE. CJ GETS OFF THE ELEVATOR AND STANDS OUTSIDE THE DOOR FOR A MOMENT. HE IS VERY PALE AND HIS EYES ARE RED. HIS HAIR IS DAMP AND THERE ARE A FEW WATER SPOTS ON HIS SHIRT, HE'S OBVIOUSLY SPLASHED WATER ON HIS FACE. HE TAKES A DEEP BREATH AND GOES INTO THE LOUNGE. JULIE AND DOUG EXCHANGE A WORRIED LOOK AND JUMP UP TO GREET HIM.
JULIE: Darling, we were starting to worry! You've been gone much longer than 15 minutes. (LOOKING AT HIM CLOSELY) Are you all right?
CJ: (SMILING BRIGHTLY) I'm fine.
DOUG: And how did you find Robert? Bill said we might be able to see him later for a short time.
CJ: (CRUMPLING A BIT) He looks awful... all those tubes and monitors...
JULIE HUGS CJ.
CJ: (CONT'D) (BRAVELY) But I know he's going to get better. Papa is strong. He won't give in to this. He has a lust for life.
JULIE: (IN A RUSH) Yes, he certainly does. Before you know it, Robert will be up and around and back to his old self.
DOUG: Tap dancing, even! We'll have to run to keep up with him!
CJ SITS WEARILY.
CJ: Nice try, Doug... thanks... but...
CJ BURIES HIS FACE IN HIS HANDS.
JULIE: You must be exhausted.
CJ: I'll be all right. I'll just go check in at the Salem Inn, take a quick shower and then come back here.
JULIE: You'll do no such thing! You're staying with us.
CJ: I couldn't put you out.
JULIE: Doug, tell him.
DOUG: No Godson of mine is going to stay at the Salem Inn. I can hear Robert yelling now!
CJ: But I'll be here most of the time anyway and you both have busy lives. Really, it will be easier.
JULIE: Nonsense! We'd love to have you, darling. We'll leave the extra car for you and you can come and go as you please.
CJ: Well, if you're sure...
JULIE AND DOUG GLARE AT HIM, PLAYFULLY.
CJ: (CONT'D) Then, thank you. I'd very much like to stay with you.
OUT ON CJ.
JACK'S OFFICE. JACK IS SITTING AT HIS OFFICE WHEN JENNIFER WALKS IN AND SITS DOWN OPPOSITE HIM. HER EXPRESSION IS GRIM.
JENNIFER: I just got off the phone with my Dad.
JACK: I take it that the medical outlook hasn't improved much?
JENNIFER: Robert's stabilized, but it's still touch and go. (BEAT) Dad says Julie and Doug are pretty depressed...
JACK: I know how they feel. I have a good idea that I was the same way when you had your accident last year.
JENNIFER PLACES ONE OF HER HANDS ON TOP OF JACK'S.
JENNIFER: I gave you a good scare, didn't I?
JACK: Yes, you did. Don't ever do that to me again.
JENNIFER: Don't worry, I don't plan on it. (BEAT) I wonder if I should go down to the hospital to check up on everyone, and maybe bring some food.
JACK: Good idea. Pick up something along the way. That hospital food isn't meant for consumption. (BEAT) I'll be along in a little while and we can have a late lunch ourselves.
JENNIFER STANDS AND LEANS OVER TO GIVE JACK A KISS.
JENNIFER: That sounds good. I'll see you in a bit, Mr. D.
HOLD ON JENNIFER, AS SHE TURNS AND STARTS TO WALK OUT OF JACK'S OFFICE.
CUT TO: JOHN'S OFFICE. JOHN IS SITTING AT HIS DESK, HIS HEAD IN HIS HANDS, WHEN LEIGH STORMS IN. FOLLOWING HER IS PATRICIA, PUSHING A CART FULL OF DOCUMENTS.
LEIGH: Well, Mr. CEO! Awfully nice of you to grace us with your august presence.
JOHN: Leigh... if you think...
PATRICIA ACCIDENTLY BUMPS THE CART INTO JOHN'S DESK, SHE'S SO BUSY LISTENING.
LEIGH: Thank you, Patricia... You can just leave the paperwork...
PATRICIA LOOKS AT JOHN AND LEIGH, CLEARLY SORRY SHE'S GOING TO MISS WHAT SHE ASSUMES WILL BE JOHN'S DRESSING-DOWN MY LEIGH.
PATRICIA: I'm happy to stay... You might need me to take notes...
LEIGH: Thank you, Patricia, I appreciate your efficiency, but that will be all for now.
PATRICIA: (SIGHS, DISAPPOINTED) As you wish...
PATRICIA LEAVES, CLOSING THE OFFICE DOOR BEHIND HER.
JOHN: I warn you, I'm not in the mood, Leigh.
LEIGH: I quite honestly don't care what mood you're in! I have a pile of paperwork that's been waiting for you to go over. And we will go over it.
JOHN: I'm sure it can wait. Can't we do this tomorrow?
LEIGH: If I had the faintest glimmer of hope that you'd actually be here tomorrow, I'd consider it. But I've learned through trial and error that a John in the office is worth any number of promises of work tomorrow.
JOHN: Well, if I had wanted to be here all day, every day, I wouldn't have hired you to cover things. Apparently, if there's this much backlog, you're not exactly doing your job, are you?
LEIGH: For your information, I have been on the phone with every single field-office manager, explaining why you haven't been in the office, haven't replied to phone messages, haven't responded to email, and basically have ignored every single crisis that has come up. I haven't had time to do both our jobs, Mr. Black! Now, start signing! (SLAMS A DOCUMENT IN FRONT OF JOHN FROM THE TOP OF THE PILE)
JOHN IS CLEARLY STRUGGLING TO HOLD BACK A NASTY RESPONSE. HE GRABS HIS PEN AS IF HE'S TRYING TO BREAK IT, AND SIGNS THE DOCUMENT. HE THEN GLARES AT LEIGH, WHO SNATCHES THAT DOCUMENT AWAY, AND SLAMS ANOTHER IN FRONT OF JOHN. HOLD ON THEIR ANTAGONISM.
CUT TO: JANET'S OFFICE. JANET IS STANDING AT THE FILING CABINET, DOING SOME FILING, WHEN SHANE PEEKS HIS HEAD AROUND THE OPEN DOOR.
SHANE: Knock, knock. Can I come in?
JANET TURNS AND SMILES. SHE WAVES SHANE IN.
JANET: Hello, Shane. How are you today?
SHANE: I still haven't quite recovered from our late night, but other than that, I'm wonderful.
JANET SITS DOWN AND SHANE FOLLOWS SUIT.
JANET: (LAUGHING) I still can't believe we stayed out all night. I haven't done that in years.
SHANE: It was fun, wasn't it?
JANET: It was, but I suspect you didn't come by just to tell me that.
SHANE: Ohhh... you are good... the cop in action... What was your first clue?
JANET: Deduction, my dear Donovan. John stopped by earlier, I sent him to you and now you... (DRAMATIC PAUSE) are returning to the scene of the crime.
SHANE: (LAUGHING) Well played, Yamada, well played. Yes, you've got it.
JANET: I knew that... (BEAT) Think you can help him?
SHANE: Yes, I do.
JANET: I'm glad.
SHANE: I'm glad you're glad. (TEASING) So does this mean my redemption is complete?
JANET PRETENDS TO THINK FOR A MOMENT.
JANET: Well... I do find it awfully difficult to be mad at a man who dances as divinely as you do.
SHANE NOTICEABLY BRIGHTENS AND SITS UP A LITTLE STRAIGHTER.
SHANE: Really? Divinely, eh? Well, I do like that.
HE LEANS OVER THE DESK.
SHANE: (CONT'D) So... Which dance was your favorite? The tango or the fox-trot?
JANET MERELY RAISES AN EYEBROW.
SHANE: (CONT'D) Oh, I know. It was the tush push... wasn't it?
JANET BURSTS OUT LAUGHING.
JANET: That's for me to know and you to find out. (BEAT) Maybe.
SHANE: Oh, I think I can worm it out of you. I am a spy, you know. We have our ways.
JANET: You do, do you?
SHANE: My personal favorite is to offer a bribe. How about lunch at Euterpe?
OUT ON SHANE'S OFFER.
SMALL NURSES' STATION / LOUNGE. BILL IS STANDING AT THE DESK, INITIALLING CHARTS. JENNIFER GETS OFF THE ELEVATOR CARRYING A LARGE DELI BAG. SHE STOPS NEXT TO BILL AND KISSES HIM ON THE CHEEK.
JENNIFER: Hi Daddy. Any word on Robert?
BILL: Nothing new I'm afraid. Robert's still in critical condition.
JENNIFER HOLDS UP THE DELI BAG.
JENNIFER: I thought I'd come by with lunch for everyone. Have you eaten yet?
BILL: (LOOKING AT HIS WATCH) It's almost time for rounds, I'll just grab something later.
JENNIFER: Please remember to eat, Dad. I worry about you.
BILL: I'll be fine, as long as I have my beautiful daughter looking out for my well-being.
JENNIFER: It's just that you forget to enjoy yourself sometimes.
BILL: That's not true, I came to the Halloween party, didn't I?
JENNIFER: Yes, after I practically browbeat you. Did you have a good time? (SLYLY) What did you think of Norma?
BILL CRINGES SLIGHTLY, HE LEFT HIMSELF WIDE OPEN FOR THAT ONE. HE LOOKS AT HIS WATCH AGAIN.
BILL: I really have to go and do rounds...
JENNIFER: Dad, come on, did you like Norma? I think you two have a lot in common. She's a very nice woman.
BILL: I'm sure she is, sweetheart. But I really do have to get back to work now.
BILL KISSES JENNIFER ON THE CHEEK AND HEADS DOWN THE HALL. HOLD ON JENNIFER WATCHING HIM SPECULATIVELY.
CUT TO: JOHN'S OFFICE. JOHN AND LEIGH ARE SIGNING PAPERS. BO WALKS IN, WITHOUT KNOCKING.
BO: Hi, John, are you...
SEEING LEIGH, HE STOPS ABRUPTLY.
BO: (CONT'D) I'm sorry to interrupt. There was no one at the desk outside.
JOHN: Don't sweat it. Come on in, Bo, sit... We're nearly done.
BO: Are you sure? You look awfully busy...
LEIGH HARUMPHS, BUT COVERS WITH A COUGH.
JOHN: Trust me, I'm sure... (JOHN TURNS BACK TO THE PAPERS AND SIGNS THE LAST ONE) (TO LEIGH) If that's all, am I free to go?
LEIGH: (GATHERING ALL THE PAPERS TOGETHER) You're the boss.
BO: Really... I'm in no hurry. I can wait outside until you're done.
JOHN: We're done.
LEIGH PICKS UP THE PAPERS, STANDS AND TURNS TO LEAVE. SHE LOOKS AT BO, THEN JOHN.
LEIGH: Since someone in the room seems to have forgotten their manners, allow me... (HOLDS OUT HER FREE HAND) I'm Leigh McCloud... chief cook and bottle washer for EcoSystems...
JOHN CRINGES.
BO: (SHAKING LEIGH'S HAND) (BEFUDDLED) Hi... I'm Bo Brady...
LEIGH: Nice to almost meet you, Mr. Brady. Now if you "gentlemen" will excuse me, I have work to do.
LEIGH WALKS OUT THE DOOR AS BO AND JOHN WATCH HER.
BO: Who or what was that?
JOHN: Didn't I tell you? She's my own personal guide to business hell...
HOLD ON JOHN'S DISMAY.
CUT TO: JACK'S OFFICE. JACK IS TIDYING UP HIS DESK TO JOIN JENNIFER AT THE HOSPITAL WHEN THE PHONE RINGS. JACK ANSWERS. IT'S ADRIENNE, TWO-WAY.
JACK: Deveraux, here.
ADRIENNE: (LAUGHING) Kiriakis, here.
JACK: Adrienne, hello! How are you?
A LARGE VASE OF MIXED FLOWERS IS ON THE TABLE NEXT TO ADRIENNE. SHE TOUCHES A FEW BLOOMS.
ADRIENNE: Wonderful, Jack. I wanted to call and say thank you for these gorgeous flowers.
JACK: Just my way of saying "Happy Anniversary" to my favorite sister.
ADRIENNE: I'm your only sister, Jack.
JACK: Well, there you go, then. (BEAT) How are Justin and the boys?
ADRIENNE: They're all fine and send their love. How is Jennifer? And Abby... did she like her birthday present?
JACK: Did she like it? She loves it! Leave it to you to send my child a miniature drum! We've got to hide it at night so she doesn't start banging on it at six a.m.!
ADRIENNE GIGGLES.
JACK: (CONT'D) Just you wait until Christmas! Then we'll see who has the last laugh...
JUSTIN SITS NEXT TO ADRIENNE AND GRABS THE PHONE AWAY FROM HER.
JUSTIN: All right, all right, enough already! (TO JACK) Can you believe I've finally found a sitter who's willing to take on four boys and she sits here gabbing to you.
JACK: I gather you've got a big night planned?
JUSTIN: (KISSING ADRIENNE'S HAND) I sure do. We're going to celebrate in style for as long as we can stay awake. (BEAT) So you have to hang up now so Adrienne can go and get ready.
ADRIENNE: (TEASING) And just what is that remark supposed to mean? How long do you think it will take an old rundown hag like me to get ready?
JUSTIN: I didn't say that, sweetheart. What I meant was... (INTO THE PHONE) Jack, here, tell her what I meant.
JACK: (LAUGHING) Oh no, you're not getting me in the middle of this. (SHOUTING) Happy Anniversary! Have fun tonight, Adrienne!
ADRIENNE: (LAUGHING) Oh I will! Bye!
JACK HANGS UP. HOLD ON ADRIENNE "BEATING UP" JUSTIN.
SALEM UNIVERSITY/STUDENT UNION. CARRIE IS SITTING IN ONE OF THE LOUNGES, DRINKING A SODA WITH A STRAW WHILE STARING AT A BULLETIN BOARD OF ACTIVITY AND CLUB ANNOUNCEMENTS. SHE SUDDENLY HEARS A NOISE; IT'S THE SOUND OF HER STRAW SUCKING UP AIR AS SHE REACHES THE BOTTOM OF THE SODA. EMBARRASSED, SHE LOOKS AROUND TO SEE IF ANYONE IS STARING, BUT FINDS THAT THE ONLY OTHER PERSON IN THE ROOM IS ASLEEP. SHE TAKES THE SODA CAN OVER TO THE RECYCLING BIN, WHICH IS RIGHT BESIDE THE BULLETIN BOARD SHE WAS LOOKING AT. SHE THEN RETURNS TO WHERE SHE WAS SITTING, PUT CAN'T SEEM TO STOP STARING AT THE BULLETIN BOARD.
CARRIE: (SOTTO VOCE) Come on, Carrie...
CARRIE GETS UP AND GOES OVER TO THE BULLETIN BOARD. SHE PULLS A PEN OUT OF HER PURSE, AND THEN GETS HER CALENDAR OUT OF HER BOOKBAG.
CARRIE: (CONT'D) Let's get this over with...
SHE STARTS SIGNING HER NAME TO SOME OF THE LISTS ON THE BULLETIN BOARD, THEN NOTES THE TIMES IN HER CALENDAR. HOLD ON CARRIE AS SHE BROADENS HER HORIZONS.
CUT TO: EUTERPE. THE LUNCH RUSH IS IN FULL SWING. SHANE AND JANET ARE AT ONE TABLE HAVING LUNCH. JANET IS LAUGHING AT A STORY SHANE IS TELLING. BO AND JOHN SIT AT ANOTHER TABLE, ENJOYING THEIR LUNCH. GO TO: EVE, STANDING IN THE SHADOWS BY THE STAGE, WATCHING EVERYONE HAVING A GOOD TIME. IAN COMES UP BEHIND HER.
IAN: Eve?
EVE: What? What's wrong? Did Aki threaten Lorenzo again? Did you lose your Dead Can Dance CD? Or has Jasmin finally run out of tie-dye, causing her to go into shock?
IAN: None of the above. I saw you standing here alone, and thought you might want to talk to a friend.
EVE: Well, hard as it may seem to believe, the much-vaunted Ian ESP is on the fritz. I'm fine.
IAN: You seem awfully interested in the lunch crowd today.
EVE: Just wondering how all these seemingly busy, highly-paid people can take two hour lunches, while I, slaving for pennies, can only manage 10 minutes and a cup of soup?
IAN: Privilege of rank?
EVE GLOWERS AT HIM.
IAN: (CONT'D) Seriously, Eve, I can't remember the last time I saw Bo Brady in here for lunch. Or your Dad, for that matter.
EVE: And that's another thing. He's looking awfully chummy with that police captain.
IAN: Well, they were having a good time on Halloween. Maybe they're dating.
EVE: No... couldn't be. Dad's not interested in that sort of thing.
IAN: Eve, c'mon. Why not?
EVE: Well... he's just not. Kimberly was his one true love... That thing with Kayla didn't count. He's still not over Kim... 'Never will be... No matter what she did, he always wanted her...
IAN: Just like you're not over Nick?
EVE: That is not what I meant. I am over Nick. I hate him!
EVE TURNS AND STORMS OFF.
IAN: Why is it I think the lady "doth protest too much"...?
HOLD ON IAN'S SPECULATION.
CUT TO: SMALL NURSES' STATION / LOUNGE. CJ, JULIE, DOUG SIT AROUND THE SMALL TABLE. THERE ARE COFFEE CUPS AND JUICE BOTTLES IN FRONT ON THEM. JENNIFER WALKS IN AND STOPS SUDDENLY, SURPRISED TO SEE CJ. CJ MIGHT BE EXHAUSTED, BUT HIS INNATE SENSE OF FLIRTATION IMMEDIATELY KICKS IN, ONCE HE SEES THE LOVELY JENNIFER.
CJ: (LOOKING UP AT JENNIFER) Is it Venus who's come down from Mt. Olympus? Is it Cleopatra who's left her barge to join us? Is it Salome who has come to dance the dance of the seven veils?
CJ STANDS AND CROSSES THE ROOM TO TAKE JENNIFER'S HAND AND KISS IT.
JENNIFER: (PULLING AWAY HER HAND) You know darned well who I am. (SHAKING HER HEAD) CJ, you haven't changed one bit since the last time I saw you.
CJ: Changed? I should hope not. Who did you expect? Superman?
JENNIFER AND CJ EMBRACE, LAUGHING. JACK WALKS THROUGH THE DOOR JUST AS JENNIFER AND CJ HUG. IT IS OBVIOUS JACK DOESN'T LIKE THE SCENE. JULIE SEES JACK ENTER AND MAKES A HASTY INTRODUCTION AS JENNIFER AND CJ SEPARATE.
JULIE: Jack, have you met Robert's son, CJ?
JACK GLARES AT HIM, BUT SHAKES HANDS WITH CJ.
JACK: I don't believe I've had the pleasure. But Jennifer obviously has...
JENNIFER SMACKS JACK.
JENNIFER: Jack... CJ and I are nearly cousins...
JACK: Nearly doesn't count, Jennifer. (TO CJ) Julie has regaled me with anecdotes of your... what shall I say? Amorous adventures...
CJ: Don't believe half the things you hear. Stories get exaggerated when they're re-told.
JACK: Uh-huh... if even half of what I've heard is true, you and I are going to have to have a long talk about my wife...
CJ: Your wife?
JENNIFER PRACTICALLY PUSHES HERSELF BETWEEN THE TWO OF THEM.
JENNIFER: CJ, this is my husband, Jack Deveraux.
CJ: Ahhh... so this is the lucky bugger who stole the hand of the beautiful Jennifer Horton.
JACK: Jennifer Deveraux.
CJ: (ASSUMING FLATTERY WILL GET HIM EVERYWHERE) Deveraux. As in Deveraux Publishing?
JACK: The same.
CJ: You've made quite a splash in the publishing industry.
JACK: We have every intention of making an even bigger splash in the near future.
BILL HORTON ENTERS INTERRUPTING JACK AND CJ. EVERYONE TURNS TO LOOK AT BILL.
DOUG: Bill, is there news?
CJ: How's my father?
BILL: (CAUTIOUSLY) I do have news. There has been a change in Robert's condition. (BEAT) However, it's not good.
HOLD ON EVERYONE'S CONCERN. AND OUT. FADE TO BLACK.
