TEASER

NURSES' STATION, UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL. BILL WALKS UP TO THE NURSES' STATION, LOOKING AT HIS PAGER. HE PICKS UP THE PHONE AND DIALS.

BILL: Dr. Horton, here. (BEAT) I'll be right there.

BILL HANGS UP THE PHONE AND TURNS TO THE NURSE ON DUTY.

BILL: Pam, please have Dr. Wells paged to the E.R., stat.

KAYLA WALKS UP AND OVERHEARS.

KAYLA: Sounds serious. Can I help?

BILL: Kayla, great, I was just about to have you paged, too. I need to have a surgical team and an O.R. prepared immediately. We've got a critical gunshot victim coming into the E.R. right away.

KAYLA: I'll get right on it.

HOLD ON KAYLA DIALING THE PHONE WHILE BILL RUNS FOR THE ELEVATOR.

CUT TO: JACK AND JENNIFER'S BEDROOM. JACK AND JENNIFER ARE SNUGGLING UNDER THE COVERS.

JACK: Well, Mrs. Devereaux, that was quite a bit more fun than Yahtzee.

JENNIFER: Thank you, Mr. Devereaux. I had a great time.

JACK: I must say your gamesmanship was right on target.

JENNIFER: "Gamesmanship," Mr. Devereaux? I'm sure you meant "gameswomanship."

JACK: I stand corrected, Mrs. D. (BEAT) I'm constantly amazed at your talent for indoor recreation.

JENNIFER: Thank you, Mr. D.

JACK: I'd even go so far as to say that if medals were given out for such outstanding efforts, you'd be a gold medalist.

JENNIFER: Why Mr. D., I don't need medals. The game's its own reward. Besides, this is a team sport. And, I've got the best teammate in the world.

HOLD ON JENNIFER KISSING JACK.

CUT TO: EMERGENCY ROOM, UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL. THE PARAMEDICS ARRIVE WITH THE GUNSHOT VICTIM. THE CHIEF E.R. RESIDENT, DR. MARK GREENE, MEETS THE PARAMEDICS.

MARK: What do we have here?

PARAMEDIC: Gunshot wound to the chest. Massive hemorrhaging.

MARK DIRECTS THE PARAMEDICS TO TRAUMA ROOM TWO. BILL ENTERS THE E.R. AND RUNS UP TO MARK.

BILL: Is this the gunshot victim?

MARK: Yes.

BILL: Good. I'll take it from here, Mark. I've already put a surgical team together. (TO THE PARAMEDICS) Bring the victim into the O.R.

THE PARAMEDICS RUSH THE VICTIM AWAY SO QUICKLY THAT WE STILL DO NOT SEE WHO IT IS. A NURSE CALLS TO MARK.

NURSE: Dr. Greene, we need you in trauma room one. Stat!

MARK: I'll be right there. (TO BILL) Good luck, Dr. Horton.

MARK RUNS TO THE EMERGENCY. BILL IS HEADING TOWARDS THE OPERATING ROOM WHEN KAYLA WALKS UP TO HIM.

KAYLA: We're all set. The surgical team's scrubbing right now.

BILL: Good. The quicker the better, because this doesn't look good.

OUT ON BILL AND KAYLA, RUSHING OVER TO THE OPERATING ROOM.

ACT I

EMERGENCY ROOM, UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL. KAYLA IS TALKING TO THE PARAMEDICS. SHE IS TRYING TO DO SOME OF THE PAPERWORK ON THE SHOOTING VICTIM.

PARAMEDIC #1: And by the time we finished intubating, we were here.

KAYLA: (NODDING) Anything else you can tell me?

PARAMEDIC #2: Nah... we were already on the scene, so from the time of the shooting to the time we got here... it couldn't have been more than seven minutes.

KAYLA: Okay... Thanks, guys. (BEAT) I hope I don't see you later.

PARAMEDIC #1: Right back at ya, Kayla.

THE PARAMEDICS EXIT, PASSING ABE AS HE WALKS IN.

ABE: Any word on the shooting victim?

KAYLA: Dr. Horton took him straight up to surgery. What...

BILL WALKS IN SLOWLY.

BILL: (SHAKING HIS HEAD) There was nothing we could do. He was dead on arrival.

ABE: (UPSET) Damn!

KAYLA: Abe, what is it? (BEAT) What makes this shooting worse than any of the others we see?

ABE: This was a police involved shooting... Bo was on the scene.

HOLD ON KAYLA'S HORROR.

CUT TO: JACK AND JENNIFER'S BEDROOM. JACK AND JENNIFER ARE COMFORTABLY RESTING IN BED. THEY ARE COVERED ONLY WITH A SHEET.

JENNIFER: (SIGHS) I love times like this.

JACK: I probably have a good idea why, but tell me... what, exactly, do you love about it, Mrs. D.?

JENNIFER: I feel like right here, right now, we're the only two people in the world. I mean, I know we're not, but it's like all the pain and suffering that's going on outside of our door... It feels like it doesn't even exist.

JENNIFER LOOKS DEEPLY INTO JACK'S EYES.

JENNIFER: (CONT'D) All that's here is the two of us, and our love for each other.

JENNIFER ROLLS ON TOP OF JACK, AND KISSES HIM PASSIONATELY.

JACK: I see your point. Sometimes we need to escape from all the goings-on of the world around us.

JACK MOVES TO KISS JENNIFER AGAIN. BUT, INSTEAD OF KISSING HIM, JENNIFER MOVES TO THE SIDE OF THE BED AND LOOKS TO THE FLOOR.

JACK: (CONT'D) Looking for something?

JENNIFER: Food. I thought we might've brought something with us.

JACK: Just our appetites for each other.

JENNIFER: Too bad. I've got the munchies.

JACK MOVES A CLOSED FIST AGAINST HIS CHEST, PRETENDING TO BE HURT.

JACK: I'm wounded. I thought I was enough to satisfy you.

JENNIFER: You are, but (HER STOMACH GROWLING) I'm afraid that my stomach has a mind of its own. (STARTING TO GET UP) I'll go get us a snack...

JACK: No, stay here.

JACK GETS OUT OF BED AND PUTS ON HIS ROBE.

JACK: (CONT'D) I've got a better idea.

JACK BENDS DOWN AND PICKS UP JENNIFER, WRAPPED IN THE SHEET.

JENNIFER: Jack! What are you doing?

JACK: You'll see.

HOLD ON JACK, CARRYING JENNIFER OUT OF THE BEDROOM.

CUT TO: EMERGENCY ROOM, UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL. KAYLA IS TALKING TO BILL. IN PROGRESS.

KAYLA: Dr. Horton, you're not saying... Bo's not...

BO: No, he's not.

KAYLA TURNS TO SEE BO STANDING BEHIND HER. SHE RUNS TO HIM AND THEY HUG.

KAYLA: Oh, geez, Bo. You scared the heck out of me. I thought you were the one who was shot.

KAYLA AND BO BREAK THEIR EMBRACE.

KAYLA: (CONT'D) So who was shot? Was it Bob?

BO: No. Bob's fine. He's with Leigh McCloud. It was one of the carjackers.

ABE: Excuse me, but while you two are getting caught up, I need to talk to Dr. Horton privately about what happened in the operating room.

BO: Of course.

BILL: You'll probably need an official statement. Why don't we use my office?

BILL AND ABE LEAVE TO GO TO BILL'S OFFICE. AS THEY ARE WALKING OUT, BOB AND LEIGH ENTER. THEY SIT ON A BENCH.

LEIGH: Officer Brady, I can't thank you enough. What you did today...

BO: Really, Ms. McCloud, it wasn't anything. It's all in the line of duty...

KAYLA: What did he do?

LEIGH: What did he do? He saved my life. Those lunatic carjackers were going to kill me, and Officer Brady got them before they got me.

KAYLA: Bo, that's...

LEIGH: (INTERRUPTING KAYLA) You shoulda seen him. He was incredible. Those nutcases had me good, and he just picked 'em off...

BO: Really, Ms. McCloud, you're exaggerating...

LEIGH: Exaggerating, my foot... They wanted my car and wouldn't have given a second thought to nailing me. You saved my life, Officer Brady...

BO: Ms. McCloud...

LEIGH: I thought I had a chance to escape, but I was wrong and I froze. But, before those loonies could do anything...

BOB: Ms. McCloud, why don't you...

LEIGH: Leigh, please. I want all of you to call me Leigh. You can't save someone's life and then call her Ms. McCloud. You have to call me Leigh.

BOB: Fine. Leigh, why don't you take some deep breaths? I think you need to slow down a bit, and a few deep breaths will help.

LEIGH: Slow down? Not until I think of some way to repay Officer Brady for his valor.

KAYLA: Ms. McCloud...

LEIGH: Leigh. Remember, everyone is supposed to call me Leigh. I was so scared. Officer Brady, I can't thank you enough for saving my life. I thought I could get away, but when I realized that I wouldn't make it, I froze. Then, I heard that gun go off...

OUT ON LEIGH, TALKING A MILE-A-MINUTE.

ACT II

EMERGENCY ROOM, UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL. LEIGH, BO, BOB, AND KAYLA. LEIGH IS STILL TALKING. IN PROGRESS.

LEIGH: (SPEAKING QUICKLY) And when I heard the gunshot, I thought I was done for. I fell down, flat. I don't know why, but I looked back... But I guess that doesn't surprise me, I mean, I don't know why I did half the things I did, like trying to run, then stopping, then...

BO: You did very well, considering the circumstances...

LEIGH: (INTERRUPTING) You think so? I wasn't sure what to do. I guess it worked out all right, because here I am. Anyway, I turned back, and I saw that creep go down. Then I saw Officer Brady holding his gun, and I realized that he'd shot the guy.

BO: But I...

LEIGH: (INTERRUPTING) But nothing. You took him out. It was either him or me, and I'm glad you were there to make sure it was him.

KAYLA: Ms. McCloud, why don't you...

LEIGH: (CORRECTING HER) Leigh.

KAYLA: Leigh, I'd like to...

LEIGH: (INTERRUPTING) Officer Brady, there's no way I can thank you enough.

BO: But you don't understand...

LEIGH: (INTERRUPTING) Oh, but I do understand. And I don't want to hear any of that "I was just doing my job" talk, okay? You had my life in your hands, and you came through. You're a true hero.

BO LOOKS AT BOB IN DESPERATION. BOB IS CONCERNED, BUT SAYS NOTHING. HOLD ON BO.

CUT TO: SALEM POLICE DEPARTMENT. JANET IS IN THE LOBBY OF THE PRECINCT. SHE IS SURROUNDED BY REPORTERS.

REPORTER #1: Commander Yamada, can you tell us exactly what happened?

DIANE: Are these the same carjackers involved in Lieutenant Morgan's shooting?

REPORTER #2: Commander, we have reports there was a shooting...

REPORTER #3: Who got shot, and what's their condition?

REPORTER #4: Which officers were involved?

JANET: (YELLING) If you'll calm down for two seconds, I'll answer your questions!

THE CROWD OF REPORTERS QUIETS A BIT.

JANET: (CONT'D) There was an attempted carjacking this afternoon. Police arrived on the scene as they tried to take the car, and the assailants took the driver hostage. The police department attempted to negotiate the release of the hostage, but the suspects did not cooperate. The hostage tried to escape, and the suspects opened fire on the hostage. The police fired on the suspects... one was injured and taken to University Hospital. I do not yet have an update on his condition. The other suspect surrendered. The hostage was unharmed. (BEAT) Now, if you'll excuse me...

JANET TRIES TO GET TO THE STAIRWAY.

REPORTER #5: Who was the officer who fired the shot?

REPORTER #6: Who was the hostage?

JANET REACHES THE STAIRS.

JANET: We will release a statement when we have more information.

JANET STARTS TO ASCEND THE STAIRS.

REPORTER #2: Commander, does this mean the end of the carjacking ring?

AS THE OTHER REPORTERS YELL QUESTIONS OUT TO JANET, DIANE BREAKS AWAY FROM THE CROWD.

DIANE: (SOTTO VOCE) I think the boss might like a piece of this one himself...

HOLD ON DIANE AS SHE TAKES HER CELLULAR PHONE OUT OF HER PURSE.

CUT TO: JACK AND JENNIFER'S LIVING ROOM. THERE IS A FIRE BURNING IN THE FIREPLACE, AND JACK AND JENNIFER LOUNGE IN FRONT OF IT. BOTH ARE WRAPPED IN SHEETS AND BLANKETS. PILLOWS ARE STREWN ABOUT. GLASSES HALF-FULL OF CHAMPANGE SIT ON THE COFFEE TABLE WITH A PLATE OF CHEESES, CRACKERS, STRAWBERRIES AND GRAPES. JACK BITES A GRAPE IN HALF AND GENTLY CARESSES JENNIFER'S LIPS WITH THE TENDER INSIDES. HE THEN POPS THE GRAPE IN HER MOUTH AND KISSES HER LIPS.

JENNIFER: Ummm. You know, Jack, this "indoor picnic" was one of your more brilliant ideas.

AS SHE TALKS, SHE PUTS A SLICE OF CHEESE ON A CRACKER AND FEEDS IT TO HIM.

JACK: (CHEWING AND SWALLOWING) I think I'm inclined to agree with you. It's fortunate that we had that gift basket from the printers to pillage and plunder.

JENNFIER: You know, you're awfully cute when you're pillaging.

JACK: And you're not such a bad plunder, yourself.

THEY KISS. THEIR KISS IS INTERRUPTED BY THE RINGING OF THE PHONE. JENNIFER STARTS TO GET UP, BUT JACK FORESTALLS HER.

JACK: Let the machine answer. That's what we've got it for.

ANSWERING MACHINE PICKS UP. THE CALLER IS DIANE.

DIANE: (V.O.) Jack... boss, if you're there, pick up! I've got a hot story here: Carjacking turned hostage situation, with a shoot-out at the end... Hello... Jack??

AS DIANE SPEAKS, JACK LOOKS TO JENNIFER, WHO NODS. JACK RISES TO ANSWER THE PHONE.

JACK: Diane! Keep talking, and don't spare any details. I'm all ears...

OUT ON JACK'S INTEREST.

ACT III

EMERGENCY ROOM, UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL. BO AND BOB ARE TALKING TO KAYLA. LEIGH HAS STOPPED TALKING AND BEGUN PACING. KAYLA TURNS HER ATTENTION BACK TO LEIGH.

KAYLA: You know, Leigh, I really think I should look you over... You've had quite a shock, and may have some injuries you haven't noticed yet.

LEIGH: No, that's quite all right. I'm fine, really.

KAYLA: I know you feel fine, but you also have adreneline running through your system. I'd hate to have you go home and then find out you were more seriously injured than you think. It's precautionary, and won't take long.

BOB: You've been through a very traumatic experience, Leigh, and your memory of it is probably a blur right now. You can't give us a statement until you sort things out, anyway... Go ahead and let Kayla take a look at you.

BO: Couldn't hurt, really. And we'd all feel better knowing the doc's said you were okay.

LEIGH: (SIGHS) Well, if you all think I should, I guess I'm outvoted. Lead the way, Kayla.

LEIGH FOLLOWS KAYLA TO AN EXAM ROOM AND BOB TURNS TO BO.

BOB: We need to talk, Bo. Now.

HOLD ON BO'S WORRIED EXPRESSION.

CUT TO: SALEM POLICE DEPARTMENT. REPORTERS ARE CONTINUING TO BADGER JANET WITH QUESTIONS.

REPORTER #1: Commander Yamada! Who was being held hostage?

JANET: We're not releasing any names related to this case as yet.

REPORTER #2: Is it true that these carjackers were the same ones that shot your officer?

JANET: We have no evidence either way as yet.

REPORTER #3: Who were the officers involved?

JANET: As I said, we're not releasing names yet.

REPORTER #3: Couldn't this be a revenge shooting for the carjackers shooting one of your own?

JANET: The hostage situation and the ensuing gunfire were all handled completely by the book. All indications support the fact that the officers were acting well within police procedure guidelines, and will be commended for their work.

AS JANET FINISHES THE STATEMENT, SPENCER ENTERS.

REPORTER #4: D.A. Hanlon! What's your involvement in the case?

SPENCER: (SHRUGGING) I was in the neighborhood...

THE CROWD LAUGHS.

REPORTER #2: Are charges being filed?

REPORTER #3: Are you worried about potential I.A. findings?

REPORTER #5: Will the D.A.'s office try to pin the officer shooting on these suspects?

SPENCER: (HOLDING UP HIS HANDS TO HALT THE BARRAGE OF QUESTIONS) You seem to forget, gang, I just got here! I'm looking for anwers, too.

JANET: Which we will release when our official statement comes out. After we have all the facts. Ladies and gentlemen of the press... D.A. Hanlon and I must excuse ourselves now...

JANET AND SPENCER BREAK PAST THE CROWDS TO HEAD BACK TO JANET'S OFFICE. HOLD ON THE RESTIVE REPORTERS.

CUT TO: EXAM ROOM, UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL. KAYLA ESCORTS LEIGH IN AND MOTIONS FOR HER TO SIT ON THE EXAM TABLE.

KAYLA: Just relax... it's over now.

LEIGH IS SHAKING SLIGHTLY.

KAYLA: Did they hurt you?

LEIGH: My arms are a little sore... they grabbed me by the left arm when I first tried to run. The tall one held on to me by the left arm, and the other one... the mean one... held onto the right arm.

KAYLA: (TAKING A PEN LIGHT OUT OF HER POCKET) I need you to follow the light...

KAYLA COMPLETES THE CHECK OF LEIGH'S PUPIL RESPONSE.

KAYLA: I don't think you've got a concussion... but you do have a little bit of blood on your temple. (BEAT) Do you remember how that happened?

LEIGH: I... I don't know. (BEAT) When I tried to run, I stumbled. It's all a blur...

KAYLA: (MAKING NOTES ON LEIGH'S CHART) I'm going to have one of the doctors come in and check you over. They may want to get an X-ray or two, just to make sure there's no serious injury.

LEIGH: I'm sure I'm fine... (UNCONVINCINGLY) Everyone always tells me I have a hard head. (BEAT) But if you think it's best...

KAYLA: Let me go find a doctor for you.

KAYLA EXITS, AND THE DOOR TO THE EXAM ROOM CLOSES BEHIND HER. LEIGH PUTS HER HAND TO HER TEMPLE, AND SEES THE BLOOD ON HER PALM WHEN SHE REMOVES IT. OUT ON LEIGH STARING AT THE BLOOD.

ACT IV

JACK AND JENNIFER'S BEDROOM. JACK IS SITTING ON THE BED, SLIPPING ON A PAIR OF LOAFERS. JENNIFER COMES OUT OF THE CLOSET PULLING A SWEATSHIRT OVER HER HEAD.

JENNIFER: Well, this is a nice ending to our romantic evening, isn't it?

JACK: I'm sorry, Jennifer.

JENNIFER: For what? We should go out and get this story.

JACK: You don't mind?

JENNIFER LEANS OVER AND GIVES JACK A KISS.

JENNIFER: Why would I mind? After all, this is how we fell in love in the first place. Working together, trying to scoop each other, seeing each other every day at the office.

JACK: So I guess we've come full circle.

JENNIFER: We do it every day. We work together and I fall in love with you all over again. Only better.

JACK STANDS UP AND KISSES JENNIFER BACK.

JACK: Then by all means, let's get to work and see where that takes us.

THEY BOTH GO OUT THE DOOR, CLICKING THE LIGHT OFF AS THEY GO OUT. HOLD ON THE CLOSED DOOR.

CUT TO: WAITING ROOM, UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL. BO AND BOB WALK INTO THE WAITING ROOM. BOB GOES TO GET COFFEE WHILE BO GRABS A COUPLE OF CHAIRS AND MOVES THEM TO A CORNER. BOB HANDS BO A CUP OF COFFEE, AND THEY SIT DOWN.

BO: You want to talk about the shooting?

BOB: Yeah. Tell me, what exactly...?

BEFORE BOB CAN FINISH HIS QUESTION, ABE WALKS INTO THE WAITING ROOM AND APPROACHES THEM. BO AND BOB BOTH STAND.

BOB: Is there anything wrong, Captain?

ABE: No. I just want to congratulate the both of you on a job well done.

ABE SHAKES THEIR HANDS.

ABE: (CONT'D) The hostage was unharmed, and one of the perps is in custody. (BEAT) Too bad about the other one, though.

BO: (NERVOUS) So, what happens next?

ABE: I.A. will conduct its standard investigation of the shooting, but I don't foresee any problems.

BOB: You don't?

ABE: It's clear that Bo shot the guy to save the hostage. It was obviously justified.

BO: Abe...

BOB: (INTERRUPTING BO) You're right, Captain. If Brady hadn't shot the guy, we might've lost the hostage.

SURPRISED, BO GIVES BOB A WORRIED LOOK. BOB LOOKS AT BO, AND NODS HIS HEAD. HOLD ON BO.

CUT TO: JANET'S OFFICE. JANET AND SPENCER ARE STANDING OUTSIDE OF JANET'S OFFICE. JANET BEGINS TO OPEN THE DOOR.

SPENCER: I have this feeling that we've done this media circus thing before.

JANET: It's all too familiar, isn't it?

SPENCER: We're gonna have to stop meeting like this, Commander.

JANET AND SPENCER ENTER THE OFFICE AND FIND SHANE WAITING.

SHANE: Well, well, well... the Three Musketeers. Together again.

JANET: Thanks for waiting, Shane.

SHANE: I've been watching the press conference from here.

JANET GOES TO SHUT THE DOOR.

SPENCER: So tell me, what exactly happened?

JANET: The long version, or the short?

SPENCER: Let's go with the short, and I can get filled in later.

JANET: (TAKING A DEEP BREATH) During an apparent carjacking, Leigh McCloud tried to fight back. When they were spotted by a couple officers, the carjackers took Leigh hostage. She was able to shake loose, and one of the officers fired at one of the guys to prevent him from shooting her.

SPENCER: Never a dull moment. (BEAT) How's the guy who was shot?

JANET'S PHONE RINGS. OUT ON THE PHONE.

ACT V

JOHN'S LOFT. JOHN IS LISTENING TO A CD WHILE THUMBING THROUGH SOME OF HIS BASEBALL CARD COLLECTION. HE STANDS TO GO CHECK ON A SLEEPING BRADY. THE PHONE RINGS. JOHN PICKS UP THE PHONE. TWO-WAY.

JOHN: John Black.

KAYLA: John, it's Kayla.

JOHN: Kay. How are you?

KAYLA: I'm okay. I mean... I'm here at the hospital. I'm okay and Bo's okay. I just thought you'd want to know. I mean... I didn't know who else to call...

JOHN: Kay, slow down. You're not making any sense. Now, give it to me again.

KAYLA: Sorry, John. It's Leigh McCloud.

JOHN: Leigh? Kayla, what's wrong with Leigh?

KAYLA: She's okay. But there was a carjacking attempt tonight, and Leigh was almost killed.

HOLD ON JOHN'S SHOCK.

CUT TO: WAITING ROOM, UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL. ABE, BOB, AND BO. IN PROGRESS.

ABE: I want your report on my desk as soon as possible.

BOB: Whatever you say, Captain. (BEAT) I think we'll check in on Ms. McCloud before going back to the station, though.

ABE: Fine. I can brief Commander Yamada with what I've got, and hopefully the crime scene can be reopened to the public quickly. (BEAT) Bo, the Commander is going to have to put you on routine administrative duty while Internal Affairs completes their investigation... you're also going to have to get some counseling. (BEAT) If you'd prefer Dr. Ector over Dr. Collins, I can see if we can arrange it.

BO: (QUIETLY) Yeah... I think I'd like that.

ABE: And don't worry about the press... Commander Yamada and I will deal with them. (BEAT) If anybody asks, just say "no comment."

BOB: No problem.

ABE EXITS THE WAITING ROOM. WHEN ABE IS GONE, BO TURNS TO BOB.

BO: Why did you do that?

BOB: Do what?

BO: You know that I froze out there... why did you stop me from telling Abe the truth?

HOLD ON BO'S QUESTION.

CUT TO: JOHN'S LOFT. JOHN IS STILL ON THE PHONE WITH KAYLA, TWO-WAY. IN PROGRESS.

JOHN: (TRYING TO STAY CALM) All right, Kay, tell me exactly what happened.

KAYLA: I don't know all the details. Leigh was being carjacked, and somehow ended up being taken hostage by the carjackers. Bo and Bob showed up, and Abe, too. They were negotiating, and Leigh tried to run.

JOHN: (SOTTO VOCE) God, no...

KAYLA: The carjackers tried to shoot her, but Bo shot one of them first.

JOHN: Then Leigh wasn't hit?

KAYLA: No, not by a bullet.

JOHN: What do you mean?

KAYLA: She's a little unclear on the exact events, but it seems she fell and hit her head. A doctor's checking on her now, and he'll probably do a few X-rays to make sure that there's no serious injury.

JOHN: So you think she's gonna be okay?

KAYLA: Physically, yes, I think she'll be fine. (BEAT) Emotionally, I don't know. She's really shaken up.

JOHN: Can't say I blame her...

KAYLA: No, but there may be a problem.

JOHN: What kind of problem?

KAYLA: I think she should stay overnight, so we can keep an eye on her and make sure she doesn't suffer any adverse delayed reaction to the shock.

JOHN: That makes sense.

KAYLA: To you and me it makes sense, but Leigh won't hear of it. She keeps insisting that she's fine and wants to go home tonight.

JOHN: Yep, that sounds just like her. She likes to take care of things herself, and once she's made up her mind, it's pretty tough to get her to change it.

KAYLA: Have you ever had any success?

JOHN: I don't know if you could call it success. We've been able to reach compromises...

KAYLA: Well, that's better than we've been able to do tonight. I had one of the counselors talk to her, but she didn't seem to be able to make any more progress with Leigh than the rest of us.

JOHN: So you want me to come down and give it a shot?

KAYLA: Please. I think it would be best for Leigh to stay tonight. (BEAT) And it would make me feel a lot better, too.

JOHN: Well, in that case, I can't say no. (BEAT) I'll be over as soon as I can.

KAYLA: Don't be too long, or she might be gone.

JOHN: Don't worry. I just need to call Caroline and see if she can watch Brady. You just keep Leigh there until I show up.

KAYLA: I'll do my best.

JOHN: See you soon.

JOHN HITS THE POWER BUTTON ON THE PHONE TWICE, THEN BEGINS TO DIAL THE BRADYS' NUMBER. OUT ON JOHN'S CONCERN.

ACT VI

WAITING ROOM, UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL. BO AND BOB. IN PROGRESS.

BO: We both know what happened out there. It was obvious.

BOB: (ABSENTLY) Uh-huh...

BO: So why didn't you let me tell Abe?

BOB: I wanted to talk to you about it first.

BO: What's there to talk about? It seems pretty simple to me. I had the shot, and I froze up. (BEAT) Lucky for Leigh you didn't, and you took the guy out.

BOB: (SOTTO VOCE) If only it were that simple...

BO: It was driving me nuts how Leigh kept calling me a hero. You were the hero out there, not me.

BOB: (SARCASTICALLY) Stop, you're making me blush.

BO: I'm serious! You're the one that should be getting all the pats on the back.

BOB: I'm not worried about that stuff.

BO: But it's not right, everyone congratulating me for something you did.

BOB: Don't waste too much time getting all worked up over it. We've got something much more important to worry about.

BO: What's that?

BOB: I want to know why you froze.

BO LOOKS DOWN AT THE GROUND.

BOB: (CONT'D) What made you hesitate?

HOLD ON BOB'S QUESTION.

CUT TO: JANET'S OFFICE. JANET, SHANE, AND SPENCER. IN PROGRESS. THE PHONE IS STILL RINGING.

JANET: That's probably Dr. Horton with a report on the condition of the guy who was shot.

JANET'S PHONE RINGS AGAIN. JANET PICKS IT UP. TWO-WAY.

JANET: Yamada.

BILL: Commander Yamada, this is Dr. Bill Horton.

JANET: Yes, Dr. Horton. What have you got for me?

BILL: It's not good. The shooting victim was D.O.A.

JANET: I see.

BILL: Captain Carver has all the details.

JANET: I'll talk to him when he gets here. Thank you for calling, Dr. Horton.

JANET HANGS UP THE PHONE AND TURNS BACK TO SHANE AND SPENCER.

JANET: The perp's dead. It still sounds like a clean shoot, though.

SPENCER: You're probably right. But, Internal Affairs'll still have to investigate. It's procedure.

JANET: Of course.

SPENCER: If you'll excuse me, I have some phone calls to make. I have to get someone in to interview Leigh McCloud.

JANET: I'll let you know when all the reports are in.

SPENCER: I'd appreciate it.

SPENCER LEAVES.

SHANE: Well, Janet...

JANET: Yes, Shane...

SHANE: No one could ever accuse you of being a dull date.

HOLD ON JANET'S SMILE.

CUT TO: WAITING ROOM, UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL. BO AND BOB. IN PROGRESS. BO PICKS AT HIS CUTICLES BEFORE LOOKING BOB IN THE EYE.

BO: In that split second, when I had a clear shot of the perp... suddenly all I could think about was the shooting on the pier. (LONG BEAT) I heard the shot and felt the pain in my arm and the rain falling on me and Carly... It all happened in a split second, like that (SNAPPING FINGERS) but by the time I shook it off, it was too late, and you'd taken the shot.

BOB: (SIGHING) I had a feeling that's what happened.

BO: Bob, I'm no hero. In fact, I feel like a real shlep letting everyone congratulate me. You're the one who saved Leigh's life, and I'm going to make sure everyone knows it.

BOB: Don't be so hasty. Think about it first.

BO: What do you mean? Don't you want everyone to know it was you?

BOB: Bo, I've been around a lot longer than you, and I've learned that sometimes, there's more to a collar than who gets the credit. (LONG BEAT) What do you think will happen when I.A. finds out that you froze in the line of duty?

BO: Oh, God.

BOB: Exactly.

OUT ON BOB'S CONCERN.

ACT VII

EXAM ROOM, UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL. LEIGH IS FINISHING BUTTONING HER BLOUSE. AS SHE BUTTONS, SHE RESUMES PACING, CLEARLY STILL AGITATED. THERE IS A KNOCK ON THE DOOR.

LEIGH: Yes?

JOHN ENTERS, LOOKING EXTREMELY CONCERNED.

JOHN: Leigh, Kayla just called and I came right over. How are you?

LEIGH: I'm fine. Really. But it would take the Harvard debate team to convince Kayla and that doctor she brought in.

JOHN: What did they say?

LEIGH: That I should spend the night here! I'm fine, why can't they just believe me? The exam showed no serious injuries...

JOHN: Well, that's good news.

LEIGH: So why won't they just let me go home?

JOHN: You've had an incredibly difficult, horrible experience, Leigh. You could still be in shock, even though you feel fine. I was a cop for a while, and I know... sometimes an experience like this... it can cause a delayed reaction.

LEIGH: Yes, that's exactly what the hospital counselor said. But I'm okay... ready to get past this. Ready to go home!

HOLD ON LEIGH'S ADAMANCE.

CUT TO: WAITING ROOM, UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL. BO AND BOB. IN PROGRESS.

BO: Do you already know the answer?

BOB: I have a pretty good idea. (BEAT) At best, you'll be put on desk duty indefinitely while you go through sessions with the department shrink.

BO: God, I dunno if I can handle being pulled off the street again.

BOB: That's just for starters. Everything that happened that night on the pier, and every nightmare you've had about it, will be dredged up and examined under a microscope.

BO: You sound like you've been through this before.

BOB: Actually, no, I haven't. But I know a couple guys that have, and it's no fun.

BO: What happened to them?

BOB: What happened to them isn't important. Their problems were different. (BEAT) What we need to concentrate on is what will happen to you.

BO: Not exactly my favorite subject at the moment. (BEAT) So you think the high road would be a bumpy one, huh?

BOB: I think so.

BO: Yeah, but still... If I don't come forward with this, I'll just be in that much more trouble if I.A. discovers what happened.

BOB: That's true.

BO: As much as I hate desk duty, it's still better than not being a cop at all. (BEAT) I don't want to lose my job over this. And I certainly don't want you to suffer for being involved in a cover-up.

BOB: Listen, we're partners. That means covering each other's backs. (BEAT) If you want to tell the captain what really happened, fine. If not, that's fine too. I'll back you, either way.

BO: I appreciate that.

BOB: But either way, you need to get some help. Like I told you before, this fear of yours puts both you and me in danger when we're in the field. (BEAT) I need to be able to count on you.

BO: I know. (BEAT) Like Abe said, I will be talking to a doctor. And Dr. Ector already knows about the shooting at the pier, so I think he can help.

BOB: Good. (BEAT) Does that mean you've decided not to say anything about tonight?

BO: No. I haven't decided for sure, yet. (BEAT) What would you do?

BOB: Oh, no... That's not for me to say.

BO: Come on...

BOB: You really want to know?

BO: Yes.

BOB: Okay... I wouldn't be in this situation because I wouldn't have hesitated. I also didn't get hit by a bullet that also killed my fiancée. (BEAT) Get the picture?

BO: Yeah... It's my decision, and I have to make it on my own.

BOB: And you'd better do it soon.

HOLD ON BO'S DILEMMA.

CUT TO: EXAM ROOM, UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL. LEIGH AND JOHN. IN PROGRESS. LEIGH IS CONTINUALLY UNCONSCIOUSLY RUBBING HER NECK. JOHN GRABS HER HAND TO STOP HER.

JOHN: No offense, but you don't look fine. You don't look fine at all.

LEIGH: Nonsense! Okay, so I was a little freaked before, but that was right after, and I was in shock. But now I'm in control and I'm ok.

LEIGH PULLS HER HAND OUT OF JOHN'S AND STARTS TO PACE AND RUB HER NECK.

LEIGH: Those creeps had me before, but the police saved me. Bo saved me. That's some brother you've got there, you know that? Of course you know that, he's your brother. Bo shot the guy before the guy could shoot me.

JOHN: Bo's a good cop.

LEIGH: He certainly is. I want to thank him somehow. Him and his partner. Maybe a letter to Commander Yamada. That's some brother you've got there, John. Oh, gee, I already said that didn't I? I'm fine, though, really. Oh, God, did anyone call Patricia? She was on my car phone. And the seminar, I missed the seminar. And...

JOHN STANDS IN FRONT OF LEIGH SO SHE CAN'T PACE ANYMORE. HE GRABS HER HANDS AGAIN.

JOHN: Leigh, stop. I don't think you should be alone right now. Are you sure you won't stay in the hospital overnight?

LEIGH: (LOUDLY) No! (BEAT, MORE CALMLY) No. I'm all right now. It's over, and I just want to forget the whole thing. I'm just going to go home and put it all behind me.

JOHN: Can you really do that?

LEIGH NODS HER HEAD YES AND THEN PAUSES. HER FACE CRUMPLES AND SHE BURSTS INTO TEARS. JOHN IS SURPRISED AND UNSURE OF WHAT TO DO.

LEIGH: I don't know, I don't know. I was so frightened. I thought they were going to kill me.

LEIGHS SOBS GROW STRONGER AND JOHN HESITANTLY MOVES CLOSER AND PUTS HIS ARMS AROUND HER. LEIGH PUTS HER FACE IN HIS CHEST AND GRABS HIM SO TIGHTLY THAT HE STUMBLES A BIT. HOLD ON JOHN TRYING TO COMFORT LEIGH. AND OUT. FADE TO BLACK.
