CUSCO BIKING ADVENTURE

The rolling hills, beautiful countryside and colorful communities that surround Cusco lend themselves to exploration by bicycle. Cyclists have the opportunity to cover territory quickly and to make occasional side trips to areas not accessible by car. Followed by a fully equipped “sag wagon” to transport personal belongings and the occasional tired cyclist, our trips are designed to accommodate both novice and experienced riders. The Cusco Biking Adventure covers some of the most picturesque and attractive territory in the region and offers an opportunity to observe the traditional community life of these highlands.

Day 1: Early morning start biking south of Cusco to visit the ruins of Tipon: an Inca site dedicated to agriculture; an experimental farming place. Next we explore Piquillacta: the ruins of a great pre-Inca citadel. From here we continue along the valley to the lake Huacarpay where we camp. (CB, L,D)

Day 2: From Huacarpay we cycle along a dirt road, cross the Urubamba river through rural communities and up through Mojonpatapampa pass (3,901mt/12,795ft) where weŽll be rewarded with panoramic vistas of the Vilcanota and Urubamba Cordilleras. From here its downhill to the community of Viscachone where we set up camp. (B, L, D)

Day 3: After a 6-mile ride, weŽll stop to explore the enigmatic burial tower(chullpas), left by the Inca civilization. WeŽll continue to Paucartambo for a rest before climbing to the Acanacu pass (3,502mt/11,485ft). Camp at Tres Cruces: famous for spectacular sun-rises during the June winter solstice. (B, L, D)

Day 4: In the morning weŽll return to Paucartambo and visit the revered image of Virgen del Carmen before climbing out of the Paucartambo valley via the narrow Quencamayo gorge. WeŽll stop to explore some Incas ruins before arriving in Colquepata where weŽll set up camp and visit the 17th century colonial church. (B, L,D)

Day 5: We begin our day climbing Huachuqasa pass (4,151mt/13,615ft) before descending into a valley filled with herds of alpaca, llama, and sheep. In the afternoon, weŽll stop to investigate the extensive ruins at Pisac and shop at the local market. Then we go to Cusco. (B, L)
