Organizing Posts from SJG Mailing List Playtests

When participating in Steve Jackson Games' playtests conducted by private mailing list, it is often convenient to organize the playtest messages into their own area for ease of reference. This is a compilation of directions on configuring your mail client to do this for you automatically where supported.
If you would like to contribute new or improved directions, comments, or corrections, please e-mail me. Thanks!

NEW: PLAYTESTS ON THE WEB 3/21/04

If you would like to follow the mailing lists on the web instead in your e-mail client, you may ask the list administrator/Lead Playtester to put you on "nomail" and use the link in the e-mail confirming your subscription to the playtest list to browse the archives. You must still use your e-mail address and playtest list password assigned to you; only list members may access the list archives.

Project begun on Jan 14, 2004 with directions listed for Outlook Express 5 & 6 and MS Outlook 2000.

As of Jan 14,2004, the current playtest mailing list is named "Playtest-nobles" and all posts are tagged with [Playtest-nobles] in the subject line. In playtests to come, you should substitute their mailing lists' names for Playtest-nobles in the directions below.

Agent/Free Agent/Forte Agent

Contributed by Tall Walt

Forte Agent and Forte Free Agent are the same program as of version 2.0.
Free Agent runs with all the capabilities of Agent for its thirty day
trial, then turns off the features needed to filter email unless it is
registered. See forteinc.com.

To create a folder and filter for an email group in Agent:
1. Wait for the first message to arrive from the group and go to it.
2. Select Message, Filters, Add Watch Filter; or press ctrl-W.
3. Click the Paste Field button, scroll down to "Reply-To" or "List-Id",
select that line, and click ok.
4. Click the New Folder button, fill in the name desired, and click ok.
5. If you have added anti-spam filters, set Priority above those filters.
(If this is unclear, it probably does not apply.)
6. Make sure "Apply filters to group immediately" is checked and "This
message only" is not checked. This will transfer first message(s) to the
new folder.
7. Click ok.

Consult Agent Help for further information.

Mozilla 1.1, 1.5

  For Mozilla's e-mail client:

To create a new folder for the messages, click on the e-mail address in the Folder
list displayed in the e-mail client's window. (This is normally directly above
the Inbox folder that receives mail for the address subscribed to Playtest-nobles.)

Then click File -> New -> Folder. Give the folder a descriptive name, like
"Playtest-nobles", and click OK.

To create the filer for the mailing list, click:
Tools -> Message Filters -> New. Give the filter a descriptive name similar to
the folder's, then enter Playtest-nobles into the third blank of the default
rule, click on the check box next to Move to folder:, and select the folder
you just created from the cascading drop-down list and click OK, then close the
Message Filters dialogue.

Pine 4.x (Unix)

This page shows how to configure Pine to filter mail to a folder. The example given is a spam filter, but you can substitute the pattern "[Playtest" for "X-UKC-CSSpamCheck-Flag" and the folder "SJGplaytest" for "Spam" to get the correct effect.

Squirrel Mail (Unix)

(Squirrel Mail on io.com not yet having a filter feature, though using straight up "filter" on your account, if you have shell access, would work).

Setting it up is straight forward: Select Options -> Message Highlighting -> New, give this highlight choice a name, pick a color, and select the Subject option from the drop down. Put in the playtest lists prefix of choice, and submit.
