History:

Iphedeiah was created a Malakite shortly after the Fall. His original Superior was Michael, but when Laurence became an Archangel, Iphedeiah's honour felt the calling of the Sword more strongly than he felt the calling of War. He sought the permission of both Michael and Laurence to change Superiors and was granted his request.

Iphedeiah served largely as a demon hunter and back-up muscle for other angels on Earth, both under Michael and Laurence, until the day he was pursuing a group of Renegade demons and met up with the foursome of Gamesters who were also pursuing them. It was one against four, so the demons thought they could win and jumped him.

Iphedeiah had sent two of the Gamesters back to Hell when the Renegades stepped into the fray. Now 2 to 6, the battle was quickly over. Iphedeiah turned, knowing there was no hope of his surviving, to face the 5 Renegades, but noted their reluctance to face him.

Curious, he invoked his Resonance on them and saw that each of them had a spark of honour and the dream of being something different, something pure and holy.

The 5 demons were surprised and confused when he lowered his swords. He offered them a choice. Fight him or choose to redeem. The demons considered, then one by one they cast aside their weapons.

Rather than simply summon his Superior, Iphedeiah took them to a nearby Tether, where he sent his report to Laurence and then set about interviewing the five to see who would be the best Superior to redeem each one. The Balseraph seemed most appropriate to David, the Djinn to Marc, the Calabite to Janus, the Habbalite to Jean and the Impudite to Laurence himself. Iphedeiah then located servitors of each of those Superiors and arranged an interview between the demon and the Archangel of choice.

When it was all over, a Seraph of Stone, a Cherub of Trade, an Ofanite of Wind, an Elohite of Lightning and a Mercurian of the Sword emerged. All the demons had survived their redemptions.

Inspired by this, Iphedeiah approached Laurence about specifically pursuing Renegades for the purpose of attempting to redeem them. Laurence gave him permission to do this.

For the next several years, Iphedeiah pursued Renegades, frequently turning them over to Servitors of Novalis if they weren't quite ready, and arranging meetings between them and the various Superiors.

Then a Servitor of Novalis applied for the Word of Redemption, which had been unclaimed since the death of its previous holder. Laurence encouraged Iphedeiah to apply for the Word as well. Unbeknownst to Laurence, several of the other Archangels encouraged Iphedeiah as well.

The Seraphim Council chose Iphedeiah.

Iphedeiah is not the first Angel of Redemption, just the most recent angel to hold that title. He is rare among Servitors of the Sword in working with the Servitors of Novalis on a regular basis. He has also been known to work with Servitors of Creation and, before he left Heaven, Eli himself.

Personality:

Iphedeiah is not quite as serious as most Servitors of the Sword, especially Malakim. Perhaps it's because he can see the light at the end of the tunnel. He is unusually fond of many of the demons he has redeemed and seeks them out when he can.

While he is more generous to demons than most Malakim, if he perceives that a demon is unredeemable, that demon will be as dead as if it had faced any other Malakite.

Skills and Abilities:

Skills and Songs: Iphedeiah commands the usual arsenal of combat skills that one might expect for a Malakite of the Sword. He also has a more than usually wide range of social and investigative skills to use in pursuing Renegades. He also commands some level of skill in the Songs of Harmony, Healing, Motion, and Tongues.

Attunements and Distinctions:

Malakite of the Sword attunement: When using his resonance, he generally learns the full extent of a person's honour.

Vassal of the Sword: He can remain serious under any circumstances, even demonic provocation, and can judge the seriousness of others.

Friend of the Lord's Troops: He can judge a person's courage (for example, knowing whether his opponent is going to crack or not).

Scabbard: This attunements lets the angel "sheathe" any number of weapons just outside of normal space, concealing them utterly until needed. Drawing a scabbarded weapon (the angel simply pulls it out of thin air) may be done instantaneously. Weapons stored with this attunement must be ones that the angel can personally wield -- it can't be used to hide field artillery.

Malakite of Dreams attunement, allowing him not to be noticed while in the Marches. A gift from Blandine.

Janus's Passage Attunement, allowing him to open any lock with a mere use of his agility.

Rites:

As well as the usual Rites from Laurence, Iphedeiah also has Rite from other Archangels:

Other Stuff:

While it is possible for Iphedeiah to perform redemptions himself, he generally reserves this right for the demon's eventual Superior, as each has a different style of redemption.

Eli has gifted Iphedeiah with a sword containing the Corporeal Song of Thunder.

Jean has gifted Iphedeiah with a cell phone that can contact any Archangel via a special set of phone numbers (whether he gets the Archangel or his/her secretary or voice mail is up to the Archangel in question) and which never needs batteries or a service contract. He also has a souped-up, but entirely mundane, motorcycle from Jean.

Jordi has gifted him with the abiliy to speak with and understand the language of dogs.

A Swiss bank account is his from Marc with significant funds-- pretty much as much money as he would need to perform his job.

Almost any angel that didn't want to invoke his Superior's wrath would respond to Iphedeiah's request for aid or succor.
