HISTORY:Halcyone Kent was born on July 14, 1975 probably in Missouri somewhere. She was taken in infancy by an organisation named Neo-Zion. She has no memories of her parents or other family members and the organisation records on how she was obtained have yet to be found. She only knows her birthdate and the name Halcyone Kent, the name given to her by a Dr. Greg Tucker.
Shortly afterwards, she underwent an experiment in which Neo-Zion implanted gills and modified her lungs to hold fluids and still function. She was then raised within the confines of Neo-Zion's labs.
Occasional modifications to the gills were needed as she grew and problems were detected, resulting in Hal undergoing many surgical procedures in her childhood. Additionally, Neo-Zion tested the gills under various water conditions, which frequently required probes and meters to be attached to measure Hal's vital signs. There were also several tests, to see if she would absorb various pollutants or poisons in the water, that required blood tests and tissue samples. All in all, Hal learned early to hate and then fear the doctors and their instruments.
Perhaps in reaction to this, Hal began to develop some psychic healing abilities-- healing herself of minor injuries or diseases to avoid the doctors. Hal was careful to keep the ability to herself, for fear that revealing it would result in yet more tests. She trained herself in its use during the quiet hours when she believed herself to be unobserved.
Hal was given only the vaguest of educations by Neo-Zion-- skills required for her to undergo some of the many tests and training in the ways of terror. She was never exposed to TV, movies or other intimations of the world outside the walls of the labs in order to keep her ignorant of freedom and make her more tractable. She had seen only propaganda given by Neo-Zion to all their subjects, designed to insure loyalty to them.
In the summer of 1990, when Hal had just turned 15, agents of Bureau 13 stormed the labs where she was being kept. Hal was unaware of what was going on except for gunshots which, while not an everyday occurrance, were not too terribly uncommon to hear. This, however, was a lot of shots over a long period of time. Then, as a few techs came down to escort her and the others out, a young lady dressed in black appeared (quite literally.... one moment she wasn't there, then she was) and killed the techs.
She turned her gun on one of the subjects, but when they didn't do anything, she took the time to examine them, and noticed what had been done. She then offered to get them all out of there. They all followed her, and met up with the rest of the bureau team a few minutes later. One of the team members died covering the team's escape. As it was, the rest were lucky to escape. Hal knows that two other people who were undergoing experiments similar to hers died as well. The rest escaped.
Hal was put under custody of the state, technically speaking, but was actually put into debriefing at the Bureau. While she had little enough information to offer on Neo-Zion, she was surprisingly unfazeable when it came to information concerning the supernatural, as she had not been exposed to the cultural disinformation offered by the various media. Her psionic healing powers also drew their attention, when she was finally willing to admit to having them. The Bureau concluded she might be an asset to the organisation and proceeded to train her.
Hal has maintained some correspondence with the 6 surviving agents who freed her, who are still stationed in St. Louis.
In 1992, Hal was assigned to a team. They trained and passed their final test quite well, considering they were stationed to New York City, a hotbed of supernatural activity.
APPEARANCE:Race: Human
Sex: Female
Age: 17
Height: 5'9"
Weight: 130 lbs.
Skin color: White tanned
Eye color: Brown
Hair: Black, straight, short
Other features: Gills on the neck
Typical dress: Hal can usually be found wearing jeans, blue or black, and a high-collared shirt, such as a turtleneck, to cover her gills. She wears a Bureau 13 issue watch. At home, she's usually in stocking feet. In public, she prefers her black leather boots and black leather jacket and carries a Glock 17 pistol in an underarm holster.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES:Hal's strength, dexterity and intelligence are all well above average.
As mentioned above, Hal is amphibious, through a bioengineering process. She also has moderate levels of psychic healing ability and has trained in Tae Kwon Do.
Hal has an enemy in Neo-Zion and its agents and any independent bounty hunters, as the price on her head is significant. Because of the experiments that were done on her, she also has mild iatrophobia, fear of doctors. Because the discovery of her amphibiousness would cause undue media attention, she keeps this ability secret from all but her closest friends and associates. It was several months before she informed her teammates. She also has a deep sense of duty to the Bureau, which sometimes puts her at odds with teammates who have had less stellar experiences with the Bureau. And, of course, she has the youth disadvantage.
PERSONALITY QUIRKS:Hal doesn't eat red meat, but otherwise eats a lot without gaining weight. She enjoys the confusion caused by her nickname (most people would assume "Hal" was male). She likes to swim (indeed, she often sleeps in the pool) and is quiet around strangers.
SKILLS:Hal's terrorist background is best seen in her collection of skills, which include a frightening aptitude with Guns: Pistol and Rifle, and skills in Demolition, Disguise, Lockpicking, Acting and Stealth. Her Tae Kwon Do training, from both Neo-Zion and the Bureau includes the skills Acrobatics, Jumping, Breaking Blow, Power Blow, Karate, Karate Art, and Savoir-Faire: Dojo, as well as the manuevers Back Kick, Elbow Strike, Flying Jump Kick, Jump Kick, Kicking, Roll with Blow, and Spin Kick.
Her psionic healing ability is backed up with skills in Diagnosis and First Aid, as well as the psionic Healing skill and Sense Aura. Her amphibiousness is backed with a good Swimming skill.
Hal also has also been observed to have decent skills in Computer Hacking and Computer Operation, Cooking, Motorcycle, and Hobby: Movies.
Her only language appears to be American English.
EQUIPMENT:As well as her typical choice of dress, Hal usually carries a Mini-mag flashlight, a good set of lockpicks, and a Swiss Army knife. On assignments, as well as the Glock 17, she has an AUG .223 Rem rifle, a crash kit, binoculars, a gun cleaning kit, and clips and bullets for her weapons.
Crying Wind, played by Susan Rati: A Cherokee veterinarian with some psi powers who got infected with lycanthropy-- in this case, she's a were-hawk. Hal tends to regard her as a little impatient and judgemental, but otherwise okay. They don't tend to share a lot in common.
Thomas Hunter, played by Mike Cowper is an ex-military helicopter pilot who was attending college on the GI Bill, majoring in archeology, who had an interesting encounter at a Mayan temple. As well as archeology, he has a good knowledge of history, the occult, mythology, etc. He was influenced by the Indiana Jones movies and is good with a whip. Thomas is probably the closest to Crying Wind. He and Hal have little in common, but at least he knows how to use a pistol.
Father Robert ???, played by Nathan Terhune is a Catholic priest with a talent for exorcism. Father Robert has a standing request that he not be subjected to magic or psionics, including healing, which he regards as demonic in origin. Hal regards this as a very stupid attitude. Hal also has little use for religion and regards his attempts to discuss religious matters as a great annoyance. She tends to ignore him as much as possible.
(Phillip) Bishop, played by Ian Shot, is a spy with psionic abilities in teleportation and psychometry. He also has some training in Oriental weapon use and Japanese language and culture. Bishop gripes a great deal about all the income and property he lost when drafted into the Bureau-- his penthouse, his car, etc.-- and generally has a bad attitude toward his employer. This doesn't tend to go over really well with Hal, though she has to admit he has a great deal of martial ability, which she respects, and he has been useful with his psychometry.
Ryoko ???, played by Daryl "Powerstar," is a mage and ninja, half-American and half-Japanese. She doesn't believe in luck-- cases of luck are simply cases of unusual perception that the person puts down to luck. She has a deeply developed sense of honor and is not afraid of acknowledging other's achievements, though this may be only a quiet nod in your direction. She is, however, rather suspicious of people and tends to keep track of every odd comment or ability. It took some time for Hal to gain Ryoko's trust, though she earned her respect very early on by blowing to smithereens an opponent only Ryoko could see, based on Ryoko's eye movements. Ryoko is the second-youngest member of the group and was also somewhat culturally illiterate. These things, combined with Ryoko's friendship with Jake, have established a distant friendship between Hal and Ryoko. They don't usually, however, do things where it's just the two of them-- usually it's a triad of Jake, Hal andRyoko.
Lordan "Dan" si White, played by Jim Shot, is a gun bunny. He's been in the Bureau for some time and this team is his third. He was in the military before joining the Bureau. He doesn't have any supernatural abilities, but is calm in a crisis. He's Hal's legal guardian. Dan tends to be somewhat overprotective of Hal, but is otherwise a good person.
Lord (that's pronounced "laird") Ian MacInnery, player presently in flux, is an alcoholic mage from Scotland. He has all sorts of spells, though the group is probably most familiar with the illusion ability with which he used to harrass Jake by creating illusions of aliens. If he's not on an assignment, he's usually either drinking or already drunk. He tends to toss out nicknames for people or call them "dearie," "laddie" or "lass." In response to this (he'd just called Crying Wind, "Pocahontas") he got nicknamed "Irish." He also has been with the Bureau for some time. Because Hal was fairly culturally illiterate when they first met, Irish assumed she was naive as well. Hal tends to find Irish extremely irritating, because of this and his tendency to patronise her and pick on Jake.
Anna Kovaleski, an NPC, is a 3rd-generation Russian-American who keeps pretty much to herself. She was drafted into the Bureau when she discovered Gremlins trashing the computer systems at the place she worked in Detroit. She killed them (using a most unusual weapon-- a crossbow) and buried them, but not deep enough to keep the information from eventually reaching the Bureau. Hal owes Anna a favor or two. While they aren't particularly close, she regards Anna with a great deal of respect.
Puck, an NPC, is an elf. One of the team's earliest assignments was to investigate mysterious deaths in a particular area of Central Park. Hal and Jake volunteered to walk through the deadly area to find out what the cause of the deaths was. What they found were elves that had been accidentally transported across dimensions. The humans noisily invading their territory were shot with poison darts and killed. For some reason, Hal impressed one of their members (which caused some problems for Jake-- he would have been hit by several darts if it weren't for a spell of Ryoko's), and a dialog between his people and the team was begun. The team eventually opened a gate and returned the elves to their own dimension. Unbeknownst to them, the smitten elf stayed behind. They discovered him hiding in Thomas's Jeep. His true name was unpronounceable and he picked Puck from among several names offered. He is still living with the team. He spends a lot of time watching Jake's movie collection with Jake, Hal and/or Ryoko. While Hal is flattered that someone would be so smitten with her as to forego returning to his homeland for all time, she finds it an overwhelming responsibility at times. She doesn't find the 3-foot-and-some-odd-inches tall elf particularly attractive, but doesn't want to hurt his feelings. She's also somewhat concerned about what he might do if she got romantically involved with someone, given the attempt on Jake in Central Park upon first meeting.
