It is year 1101 of the Third Imperium and tensions run high with the Zhodani and the various Vargr states Coreward of the Imperial borders. Fueled by these tensions as well as the policies of non-Imperial governments, piracy, both by opportunistic Vargr from outside the Imperium as well as from criminal elements within the Imperium has been on the rise in recent years and the Imperial Navy is under pressure to eliminate this threat to Imperial security.

To that end, the McCloud class of Patrol Cruisers has been designed. The first ship, the INS McCloud passed its trials handily and the Navy has ordered another fourteen of the ships. One of them, the INS Miller has been tasked with patrolling the borders of the Imperium in the Spinward Marches and Deneb sectors.

Rumors of War is a Play-By-Email roleplaying game set in Marc W. Miller's Traveller universe. The time period is shortly before the outbreak of the Fifth Frontier War and the place is the "north western" border of the Imperium (so called because it's at the top left of the official maps).

Characters will be created according to Classic Traveller rules (Book 4 Mercenary for Marines, Book 5 High Guard for Navy and the Noble, Diplomat or Bureaucrat careers from Supplement 4 Citizens of the Imperium for the diplomatic personnel), including survival roles (though the GM reserves the right to interpret these as he sees fit). Characters can be from any Imperial world in the Spinward Marches, Deneb or Corridor or nearby sectors and may be of Imperial Citizen race (including but not limited Vilani, Solimani, Vargr, Aslan and Droyne).
