Wee
Deliver Mail Service Encourages Letter Writing
Beginning
in September 2000, the Wee Deliver
school-wide letter delivery system got off to a
great start. The idea was proposed in the spring of
2000 by second grade teacher Ms. Hardin. With help
from Ms. Hardin's father, who built mail boxes for
every classroom using funds provided by the PTA,
Ms. Hardin and her volunteers spent last summer
getting everything ready for mail delivery to begin
in the fall of 2000.
Explorers'
Circle Committee and Parent Involvement at
Gullett
Since 1997, a dynamic committee of Gullett
parents and the principal has met regularly and
worked hard on special projects to bring grant
funding and special curriculum extras to
Gullett.
Explorers'
Circle Brings Spanish to Gullett
Even though Austin Independent School district
(AISD) does not currently pay for Spanish teaching
at elementary school, this didn't stop a group of
Gullett parents from organizing an afterschool
Spanish program for Gullett students.
Beginning
in 1998, with the Gullett faculty's support, the
program soon expanded to provide Spanish
instruction in the Kindergarten classrooms. The
organizers have been able to add one grade per year
so that Kindergarten through second is currently
included.
A part-time native Spanish-speaking instructor
comes into each classroom several times per week.
An afterschool program is also offered for older
grades. The entire program has been funded largely
by parents with some grant funding and corporate
sponsorship. The Spanish Committee plans to seek
further grant funding, so that the costs to parents
can be reduced.
Explorers'
Circle Brings Astronomy to Gullett
The
Explorers' Circle committee's very successful first
project was aimed at funding and developing new
astronomy curriculum for Kindergarten, third, and
fifth graders. The program blasted off in the fall
of 1998.
