Trimline Phones

Western Electric Trimlines, 4 in brown, green, white and orange
At the moment, I am concentrating on collection on rotary Trimline phones. To me, they are the ultimate expression of the rotary. To be able to fit that much phone in such a tiny space is nothing short of amazing. I have sworn that I'm not getting a cell phone until I convince someone to retrofit a cellphone into a rotary trimline case...naturally, I expect the dial to work :)

Western Electric, rotary Trimline, burnt orange
This was my very first rotary Trimline. It looks red in the picture, but is actually orange, I couldn't resist the color. (Apparently, when it comes to phones, there's not a lot I can resist.)

My favorite bit of trivia concerning the Trimline is the dial. They ran into a bit of a problem. There was only so far they could shrink the dial face. Any smaller and people couldn't get their fingers in the holes. They tried several ideas, including having spokes instead of holes (users' fingers slipped out of the spokes too easily). Finally they realized that by making the finger stop slightly moveable instead of fixed, they could eliminate the space between zero and one on the dial face. That let the designers shrink the dial just enough to give us the rotary Trimline handset that fits so nicely in the hand.
