Robert Gatliff's Gateway to Origami

Origami is a Japanese word, a compound of ORI, "to fold", and KAMI, "paper." For thousands of years, origami has been a part of Japanese culture. And goes back even further in China, where paper originated. I learned my first model, the traditional flapping bird, from my uncle who spent some time in the far east. My dad gave me my first origami book in 1974 and I've been collecting patterns ever since.

Spider is a favorite of mine, a truely 3-D scuplture in paper measuring 4.5 inches square and 1.5 tall.. It took me about a half-an-hour to fold from a 10x15 piece of paper. The original design was by Max Hulme.

Winged Dragon is a design by Robert Neale with my own embellishments. From a single square sheet of paper, you get four legs, two wings, a head with a tongue, and a curved tail. I like this one because there are so many was you can customize (personalize) the model.

Kawasaki Rose uses an ingenuous twist fold. A single square sheet becomes a soft and organic shape.

Duck, complete with flat feet, is a simple model that takes only minutes to fold.
