Austin Cyclists Beware!

As long as a motorist isn't drunk, it's OK for him to drive up on the sidewalk and kill you. Tom Churchill is still dead and the man that killed him is not facing any charges. Three months after Tom's death the Austin Police Department has declined to press charges against his killer because his alcohol blood level was within the legal limits of sobriety. If someone swung a lead bar in a crowded room or fired a gun out a window and killed someone (except a cyclist) they would be charged with a crime. The term Involuntary Manslaughter comes to mind as an appropriate appellation for causing the accidental death of another human being. I have a peculiar feeling that if the cyclist killed that night almost three months ago had been wearing the blue of Austin's Finest that the man driving the sport utility vehicle would still be behind bars awaiting a trial on an assortment of charges. The scariest thing about this whole miscarriage of justice is the open invitation to vigilante action. If the Police refuse to act, someone else who held Tom dear might decide that it was time to enact justice of their own. This scary thought scenario has come true too often in these modern times, and another man's life might be ruined by the inaction of the so-called forces of justice.
