Directory of Problems by Problem number

About this database

Everyone has their own "war strory" about a pedestrian problem somewhere in the Ausitn metropolitan area. These problems can be large but are often quite small. They include many things such as dangerous intersections, bad or missing sidewalks, poor signals, lack of, or poor design on wheelchair curb cuts, crosswalks, driveways etc. Many of these problems have existed for long periods of time without any action taken. Some are still created on a daily basis due to lack of awareness by traffic engineers or public officials who "forget" about the pedestrian point of view. Many of these problems are "small" in the grand scheme of things, but have a very significant impact on a few particular individuals. Sometimes they will affect a whole group of people such as school children, blind people or mobility impaired folks.

As far as we know, there is no central place to report and record the current state of our pedestrian infrastructure. The purpose of this data base is to permanently accumulate a record of the state of our pedestrian problems. We will build this data base one report at a time, with your input. The information will be kept open for all to see. It will stand as a permanent record of pedestrian problems. This will include those problems which seem never get solved and those problems which do finally get solved. We will thus remember the method of solution as a guide to similar problems which come along later. This database will hold both complaints, and praise. We are only just beginning, so the reporting method is not at all sophisitcated.

Use the online "Pedestrian Problem Report Form" to submit an initial report. Include as much information as you can, but most important let us know who you are and where we can contact you to gather more information. We may arrange to meet you and take some digital pictures of your problem site. We will assign your problem its own problem # and add it to our pages as soon as we can handle the work. Once your problem is recorded here, you will always be able direct people's attention to this site in your quest for a solution.

We are interested in "fixing" Austins sidewalks and pedestrian infrastructure one small problem at a time if necessary. Your first step is to document your problem so that you have a specific base of information to whch you can refer when discussing it further.

As of Feb 8, 1997, our data base has only a single entry in it. We hope that that this entry will stand as a prototype for the kind of information you should try to gather. There is lots of information in Problem #1. You do not need to have all of this information gathered at once to make an initial report. Simply send us as much of the basic information as you can, along with a way for us to contact you, and we will follow up as soon as we can. Remember that we are just volunteer citizens and this may take us some time. We also welcome any new information about existing problems in the database.

To report a pedestrian problem right now use the online Pedestrian Problem Report Form or send the same kind of information by regular US mail to the WALK address:
