WALK Austin asks the Candidates
Return to the WALK home page.
Pedestrian issues are really local issues and should ideally
be addressed by local government. WALK Austin members brainstormed
on how to increase the awareness of pedestrian issues both in
the minds of the candidates for office in local elections, and
the public mind as well. To that end, we would like some questions
to be asked in any public forums which take place around our city
where citizens can question candidates or elected officials. These
are the ideas of the WALK Austin members, but we encourage you
to attend candidate forums and ask questions of your own. The
more we all share our points of view, the better our elected officials
can meet our needs.
- What recommendations do you have for moving Austin toward
the concept of a compact city?
- What creative strategies do you envision to encourage more
active participation in Ozone Alert Days?
- City ordinances usually have sidewalk requirements for new
developments. These have often been waived through variances
which have been granted easily in the past. What is your position
on these variances?
- What will you do to reduce traffic in Austin?
- Do people on foot have as much right to walk as people in
cars have to drive?
- Do you believe in the basic human right to walk in the city?
- Are you aware of the value of sidewalks in the community
for mobility and safety?
- How often do you ride a bus? Which bus routes go near your
house?
- Would you give up your car for a day and tell us how you
transported yourself?
- The state of Oregon allots 1% of their state fuel tax for
bicycle and pedestrian needs. What percent would you be willing
to commit or support in Austin?
- Funding for sidewalks has been a joke in the past. What are
you willing to do?
- Would you be willing to support 20 million dollars for the
next 20 years for sidewalks in the next bond election?
- It's more dangerous to be a pedestrian than a driver. Most
casualties are children. How would you address this safety issue?
- ...?
