WALK Austin Walks Lamar!
We conducted our first Urban Walking Tour
Saturday, March 22
Noon to 3 PM
Starting at Whole Earth Provision Co.
- We followed a 2.5-mile route along Lamar from 12th to Barton Springs Road and
back to 12th. We used a Walkability Checklist to record many aspects of the street
environment both positive and negative. We will tabulate and publish the results
of our survey on this page as soon as we can.
- We observed and recorded details of the street environment and came up with ideas
for addressing key areas of concern.
- We wish this retail area could be made more lively, safe, and accessible for
walkers! We wish to preserve and enhance links between Lamar and bordering neighborhoods,
Shoal Creek, and Town Lake.
- Our impressions will be used by Dan Burden, founder of Walkable Communities,
Inc., during a community workshop to envision ways that enhance the special character
of Lamar Boulevard.
- Dan Burden has over 20 years of experience in bicycle and pedestrian safety,
encouragement and related planning, and has overseen over 30 local and state pedestrian/bicycle
plans and research projects. Dan currently teaches around the world and will be here
April 18-24 to address the Lamar Boulevard Corridor.
- We gathered after the Walk to share impressions and gather the collected checklist
data. At that time we held a reading and signing of The
Declaration of the Right to Walk and Roll. If you wish to sign this historical
document and were not present at our Lamar event, please attend our next WALK
Austin meeting Sunday April 20, at 3:30 PM at the Austin History Center to add
your signature.
The event was sponsored by WALK Austin, Old West Austin Neighborhood Association,
Old Austin Neighborhood Association, Zilker Neighborhood Association, Barton Hills
Neighborhood Association.
