Annual Report 2006

Annual Meeting

The 2006 Annual Meeting, "Fueling Museums: Wildcatting for Big Ideas", was held April 4-7 at the Holiday Inn Beaumont Plaza. Attended by 527 participants, it featured six pre- and post-conference workshops and tours plus 39 concurrent sessions. The keynote speaker was Dr. Stephen Klineberg, Professor of Sociology, Rice University. Dr. Peter Marzio, Director, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, was another plenary speaker. Tony L. Chauveaux, Deputy Chairman for Grants and Awards, National Endowment for the Arts, addressed the general session on the second day of the conference. The closing talk was given by Observer/Commentator Terry Grose Beamsley, Assistant Director, Toledo Museum of Art. The meeting was hosted by 11 Beaumont museums and cultural institutions, most of which served as evening event venues.

Workshops and Symposia

In 2006 TAM sponsored two workshops, one on fundraising and one on digital photography. TAM also sponsored Museum Leaders Discuss the Future, October 27-28 in Galveston. Dr. Peter Bishop, Director of the Program in Studies of the Future, University of Houston, was the facilitator. Bob Rogers, founder and CEO of BRC Imagination Arts was the featured speaker. It was attended by 36.

Publications

Museline was published quarterly (Jan/Apr/Jul/Oct) in 2006. Museline includes articles on current issues affecting museums, legislative issues, association news, grant deadlines, exhibition dates, and technical leaflets. Each individual, business, and institutional member of TAM receives a copy of Museline. In September the TAM Council decided to publish the quarterly newsletter only in an electronic version beginning in January 2007.

TAM published Museline Online, its e-mail newsletter monthly during 2006. In fall 2006 TAM made some important changes: 1) it redesigned Museline Online; 2) it began using a service (Constant Contact) to distribute it; and 3) it began sending it out for free to anyone. By the end of 206, Museline Online was being sent to over 1,300 TAM e-mail addresses (up from 800 at the beginning of 2006.)

In 2006 TAM continued sales of The Museum Forms Book, Planning for Response and Emergency Preparedness, Starting Right: A Basic Guide to Museum Planning, and Art Guide Texas. Action Plan: Multicultural Initiatives in Texas Museums is published on the TAM Web site.

Information Services

Web Site: TAM continued to maintain and update its Web site in-house throughout 2006.

MuseSearch: In 2006 TAM maintained and updated MuseSearch, its online searchable database of information on Texas museums at http://www.museumsusa.org/directory/search/. Hosted by www.MuseumsUSA.org the number of museums listed on MuseSearch was 671 at the end of 2006.

TexasHELP: In 2006 TAM partnered with Exhibits USA in Kansas City to conduct the fourth year of the Hands-on Experiential Learning Project (HELP), a program designed to provide onsite technical assistance and exhibitions in three regions of Texas. It is funded by the Texas Commission on the Arts, the Institution of Library and Museum Services, and four Texas foundations.

Traveling Environmental Monitoring Kit Program

With 1998 funding from the Meadows Foundation, TAM implemented a program to make six traveling environmental monitoring kits available for loan to Texas museums. Kit Managers in each of TAM's six regions supervised the loan of kits to Texas museums in 2006.

Other TAM Services and Activities

TAM Council: As required by the TAM bylaws, the TAM Council conducted quarterly Council meetings on February 17, June 26, September 8, and December 8.
Committees: Active committees during 2006 included Annual Meeting Program and Publications. Council Retreat: September 9-10, 2006, the TAM Council met for a day and a half retreat in Fort Worth to develop an "Action Plan," setting TAM goals and priorities for the year ahead.

Membership

At the end of 2006 the TAM membership stood at 760 comprised of 454 individuals (including 25 trustees and 49 students), 28 businesses, and 278 institutions. TAM institutional members may designate one staff member for each $200 in institutional membership dues. There were 93 institutional designees by the end of 2006. Support of members has been essential to allow TAM to expand its services to the Texas museum community and to remain the largest state museum association in the nation.
