Mille Fleurs
Mille Fleurs was woven in Flanders
around 1510. The top section consists of a Flemish landscape of
houses, castles, and windmills throughout the hills.
Within the richly adorned background of flowers are various animals,
including birds above the crest, a dog and a deer on either side,
and towards the bottom rabbits (representing fertility) hopping
about.
A wreath envelops the shield denoting heroic deeds and honor bestowed
upon the bearer. The shield is hung on a tree in the center of
the landscape, while the armor is arranged on halberds.
