The Low-Warp Weavers
In the low warp weaving process, the
design ("called the cartoon") is placed on the loom,
underneath the warp, face-to-face with the tapestry being woven.
The weaver can see the pattern in the spaces between the warp
yarns and so copy "the cartoon" more precisely than
the high-warp weaver.
In addition, the painters of old who prepared the cartoon for
the low-warp looms knew that the image would be reversed and thus
made "the cartoons" in a mirror image of the finished
tapestry.
