FrameMaker Practice & Quick-Refs: Book Building and Tables of Contents
|
See the previous instructions on how to go about this assignment.
To get some practice creating a book in FrameMaker and then generating the table of contents (TOC), do the following:
- Use these partially formatted files to create a small book:
Note: Save these files as regular FrameMaker files. Click File > Save As and then manually change the .mif to .fm. Change the chapter titles to Heading1 and the first-level headings to Heading2 (if you are interested in experimenting, tag the indented third-level headings as Heading3).
- To build the book:
- With all three files open in FrameMaker, click File > New > Book.
- Click yes to the prompt asking whether to add the current file.
- With the book file still open, add the other files to the book in any order you wish.
- In the book file, right-click on each chapter name, click Numbering, select the Page tab, select Continue Numbering from Previous File in Book, and click Set.
- For each of these three files, open the file and:
- Use double-sided pagination, with the page numbers on the outside bottom corners of the page (specifically, at the bottom left corner on even-numbered pages and at the bottom right corner on odd-numbered pages).
- Force all files to end on an even-numbered page.
- Use arabic numbers for the body pages.
- Use consecutive page numbering throughout this book, starting at chapter 1.
Note: You also have to build an index using these same file; save the files you've just created so that you don't have to repeat these.
- To create the TOC:
- Include chapter titles and first-level headings in the TOC (Heading1 and Heading2).
- When you generate the TOC, accept the FrameMaker defaults. However, if you are feeling adventuresome, experiment with leader dots. (See TOCs for an illustration.)
- After you have generated your first TOC, display the TOC file, add or modify paragraph tags as follows, and do Update All:
| Title |
Use FrameMaker defaults; add "Contents" as title. |
| Head1TOC |
16pts above/8pts below; Arial 12pt bold |
| Head2TOC |
0pts above/0pts below; Times New Roman 12pt regular roman |
- To ensure that table of contents retains this format, regenerate the TOC and check its format. You must delete the original TOC before generating a new one. Just highlight the TOC file in the book file, right-click, and select Cut.
- Zip these documents into a compressed file named with your first name and initial and _booktoc1.zip (for example, davidm_booktoc1.zip) and send it by e-mail attachment to your instructor.
