Time Master

Maybe it was called Time Lords, or Time Patrol, or something, I don't really remember anymore.

I wish I remembered more about this game. It had an interesting setting. It was the year 7200 and something, and mankind had finally invented time travel. But what we discovered was that there were an infinite number of diverging universes, ranging from the merely unusual (the U.S. President from 1980 to 1988 was Donald Reagan) to the seriously divergent (the Roman Empire conquered the Americas by the year 200 A.D.) to the downright warped ("Look, up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane!"). These universes were classified by the Time Corps, of which the characters were members. They could be from any divergent history, and any time period; they were "snatched" to be used as agents.

The Time Corps' timeline is identical to our own up until the modern day, and, to prevent really weird quandaries, cannot be "messed with" by going back in time; each jaunt back in time simply creates yet another divergent timeline. There is another group, the, uhh, the somebodies, some nasty time raiders who want to do nothing more than milk time travel for personal power and gain and destruction. The job of the Time Corps is to maintain the integrity of individual timelines as best they can. If in timeline D1286 the South won the battle of Gettysburg, and the badguys are messing with that event, the Time Corps' job is not to make D1286 patch the Prime timeline, but rather to make sure the South wins at Gettysburg in D1286.

The game had a lot of potential; sadly, when I started playing it I was a little young (14 or so) and didn't understand history very well, nor did I have a really good encyclopedic knowledge of events. And, of course, I didn't own the game; a younger friend of mine purchased it and asked me to run it a few times. At this point in my life, though, no matter what game I ran for a while, eventually we reverted to Champions.
