The Data Center Needs an Operating System

IO’s CIO/GM of IO Labs Kevin Malik gave a standing-room only presentation to an intrigued (but difficult to impress) audience at Uptime Symposium 2013. The room was immediately engulfed in the presentation as Malik compared current data centers to the airline and automobile industries of years past. Both of these adopted software operating systems decades ago and have flourished since, thereby demonstrating that it only makes sense for data centers to do the same, which leads to energy and cost efficiency, higher security, and better optimization. After the presentation many participants were in agreement with Malik’s statement that, “A server without an operating system and a data center without an operating system is nothing but a box of parts.”
